A multi-componential methodology for exploring emotions in learning

2018

Studies on emotions in learning are often based on interviews conducted after the learning. Therefore, these do not capture the multi-componential nature of emotions and how emotions are related to the process of learning. We see emotions as dimensional and multi-componential responses to a personally meaningful events and situation. In this methodologically frontline study we developed a multi-componential methodology, which provides complementary information about emotions during learning. In this study, by using a within subject design of one person, we focused on emotions during the professional identity learning. In a laboratory setting, the subject was shown personally meaningful vide…

Significant Moments in a Couple Therapy Session: Towards the Integration of Different Modalities of Analysis

2020

This chapter presents a couple therapy session from four different research perspectives: The verbal dialogue was analysed with the Dialogical Investigations of Happenings of Change method, the embodied reactions of each participant were analysed by examining the electrodermal activity of each participant, and nonverbal synchrony was observed between the participants. Stimulated Recall Interviews, conducted individually after the session, were used to gain insights on the participants’ thoughts and feelings concerning particular moments in the session. We wished to determine what could be learned from the embodied reactions of the participants in couple therapy, including whether the data o…

Contributions of Nonverbal Cues to the Accurate Judgment of Personality Traits

2020

This chapter summarizes research on nonverbal expressions of behavior (nonverbal cues) and how they contribute to the accuracy of personality judgments. First, it presents a conceptual overview of relevant nonverbal cues in the domains of facial expressions, body language, paralanguage, and appearance as well as approaches to assess these cues on different levels of aggregation. It then summarizes research on the validity of nonverbal cues (what kind of nonverbal cues are good indicators of personality?) and the utilization of nonverbal cues (what kind of nonverbal cues lead to personality impressions?), resulting in a catalog of those cues that drive judgment accuracy for different traits.…

Saying-Doing Correspondence

2002

The study of the correspondence concerns the functional relationships between an individual’s verbal and non-verbal behavior. The analysis of the functional relations between saying and doing is interesting from a theoretical perspective (e.g.: how and when do they relate together? Learning to tell the truth etc.) and from an applied point of view: many clinical procedures, as verbal forms of psychotherapy, are based on the idea that changing people’s verbalizations about their behavior will lead to corresponding changes in the way they behave. Since say-do correspondence training has been employed in a variety of behaviors and types of procedures to examine the conditions upon which the ar…

El análisis del discurso oral y su enseñanza

2015

Speaking a language does not only mean mastering the rules that govern its grammar, but also requires knowing how to communicate, as well as being able to interact efficiently in this language, exchanging and interpreting information in different registers and language varieties. It is necessary, therefore, to teach Pragmatics, understood as the analysis and reflection on the usage and on the strategic mechanisms displayed when speaking (acting), especially when the interaction takes place in specific communicative circumstances. Learning the oral component of a language must prepare students for the analysis of speech samples. By learning the oral aspects, students acquire some skills and …

Engaging with mathematics in the kindergarten. Orchestrating a fairy tale through questioning and use of tools

2013

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to analyse how a kindergarten teacher orchestrated a mathematical activity involving a fairy tale. Taking a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, naturally occurring talk-in-interaction has been analysed in order to scrutinise the subtleties of the orchestration. The fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears was used both as context for the activity, but also as a means through which mathematical concepts were engaged with. The analysis shows that the orchestration bears characteristics of questioning and use of tools such as voice, facial expressions, and concrete materials. The orchestration is also characterised by sincere planning in adv…

Effects of atypical antipsychotics on neurocognition in euthymic bipolar patients.

2011

Abstract Background Different factors may influence cognitive functioning in bipolar disorder such as the effect of subsyndromal symptoms, the history of psychotic symptomatology or substance abuse, negative symptomatology, chronicity, sleep disturbances, and hormonal factors. The effect of pharmacologic treatment on cognition is still uncertain because of an insufficient number of studies examining this issue. Objective The aims of this study were to compare neuropsychologic performance of treated bipolar patients with that of controls, including unmedicated patients and healthy subjects, as well as to evaluate possible neurocognitive differences among 3 different atypical antipsychotics. …

Verbālās un neverbālās komunikācijas prasmju pielietojums operāciju māsu praksē

2021

1997

This paper deals with what is called here paralinguistic organizers i.e. textual devices like underlining, brackets, footnotes, and, on screen, pop up fields,... In the frame of the theory of discourse comprehension (van Dijk & Kintsch, 1983) it is proposed to view technical texts as tools, more or less efficient, that readers use to build their representation (situation model). It is known that the schematic superstructure of a text can significantly enhance its comprehension and memorization. It is assumed here that another kind of text structure could play a similar role i.e. the structure based on the main points / secondary points distinction. More generally a text can be viewed as a s…
