La perception de l'iconicité phonologique testée sur un corpus de verbes français

2019

Several recent discoveries, notably from cognitive neuroscience, have had repercussions in the humanities and more particularly in the linguistics’ field. They have given rise to a renewed interest in the theme of phonological iconicity, which tackles the entirety of phenomena of similarity between signifier and signified inside a language. A multitude of studies then emerged, attesting to the existence of phonosymbolic phenomena in the languages of the world. Despite this considerable growth, the content of these works, mainly written in English, remains to this day rather unknown to the French-speaking public, still relatively anchored in the tradition of Structuralism. This dissertation …

Grammatica, didattica linguistica, tecniche di scoperta

2021

The study of grammar is not a source of enthusiasm for those who learn a language and the teaching of grammar often frustrates those who teach it. As a consequence, in learning and teaching motivations and results are negatively affected. A lively debate exists on the strategies to be employed in the teaching of grammar and in the metalanguage which teachers use in classrooms. Without the pretense of solving the knots of such debate, this book concretely indicates how an experimental method, made up of observations and reasoning, can be didactically stimulating and profitable.

Grammatical changes caused by contact between Livonian and Latvian

2014

The article provides insight into the process of various grammatical changes in Livonian and Latvian that have taken place as a result of prolonged contact between the languages. Livonian is strongly influenced by Latvian at different levels due to the close contact between the speakers of two languages; it is necessary to note that speakers of Livonian were bilinguals for a long time. It is clear that Livonian has affected Latvian in a similar way. The process of mutual borrowings can be observed most clearly in the vocabulary, especially in dialects; however, there are changes that have occurred in the phonetics and grammar as well. Different changes can be found as a result of mutual inf…

Homeric Evidences of an Inherently Actional Opposition: ἔρχομαι vs ἦλθον

2020

The paper aims at analyzing the paradigmatic relationship between the verbs ἔρχομαι and ἦλθον in Homeric Greek. Both verbs convey the idea of going within a Homeric suppletive paradigm. Although suppletivism between ἔρχομαι, εἶμι, ἐλεύσομαι (future), ἦλθον (aorist), εἰλήλουθα (perfect) is generally accepted, there is still uncertainty on both etymology and semantic features involving inherent actionality, with particular reference to ἔρχομαι. Therefore, the actional status of ἔρχομαι and its relationship with ἦλθον need further investigation. A textual analysis of the Homeric occurrences of both ἔρχομαι and ἦλθον, focusing on the semantic-syntactic discourse context, has shed light on their…

Mitigating-casi: relation between propositional content and discourse units

2018

El aproximativo casi entraña la inversión polar de su proposición, sin embargo, los usos considerados expletivos presentan valores atenuantes. Este trabajo complementa con un estudio de corpus la descripción teórica del uso expletivo-atenuante en relación con la unidad discursiva de casi en el habla coloquial. La unidad que ocupa en el discurso determina su uso atenuante y supone una prueba efectiva de su naturaleza semántica, al tiempo que aclara ciertas cuestiones de la bibliografía deductiva. This paper explores the mitigating function of Spanish casi and its relation to the discourse units casi fulfills in spoken language. Casi can either entail a polar inversion of the proposition it h…

Verbal compounding in Latin: the case of -MAKE verbs

2013

This paper aims at describing Latin compound verbs (CVs) whose second member is a verbal constituent connected with facio ‘to make’. Though there is a large literature on CVs in other languages, little has been said on Latin (Flobert 1978; Fruyt 2001 inter al.). CVs are extremely interesting in several respects. First, compared to Latin nominal compounds, whose core consists of exocentric formations, -MAKE CVs are endocentric constructions (Brucale 2012). Second, they represent an island of productivity in the generally unproductive area of verbal compounding in Latin. Third, they can be compared to analogous constructions in other Indo-European languages, viz. Persian and Hindi, which exhi…

Paths of grammaticalization of Early Latin per/per-: A cognitive hypothesis

2016

The paper describes the semantic network of the Early Latin preverb per- and its relation with the corresponding preposition per ‘through’. Making use of the Cognitive Grammar framework, we argue that the basic spatial semantics of both preverb and preposition (here called the “PER relation”) can account for the whole set of concrete and abstract meanings per and per- express. In spite of this common semantic nucleus, however, per- and per differ as to the mechanisms at work in the development and organization of their semantic continua, thus imposing a differentiated analysis at the semantic as well as the morphosyntactic level. In this respect, the notions of grammaticalization and lexica…
