The results of a study on the bryofloras of three historical gardens (Villa Giulia, Parco d'Orléans and Giardino Garibaldi) and other four smaller green areas (at Niscemi, Stazione Lolli, Castelnuovo e Kalsa squares) of Palermo are provided. These bryofloras (including 65 taxa) are analyzed from the taxonomic, ecological and chorological point of view and compared with Botanical Garden one. Bryofloristic indices, used as instrument of environmental evaluation, show that bryophyte flora of smaller green areas is more affected by building and traffic density of surrounding zone

Genetically encoded fluorescent markers have revolutionized cell and molecular biology due to their biological compatibility, controllable spatiotemporal expression, and photostability. To achieve in vivo imaging in whole animals, longer excitation wavelength probes are needed due to the superior ability of near infrared light to penetrate tissues unimpeded by absorbance from biomolecules or autofluorescence of water. Variation in the TonB-dependent outer-membrane proteins in plant-associated strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens

International audience; Genomic sequences of ten strains of plant-associated Pseudomonas spp. were surveyed for the presence of TonB-dependent outer-membrane proteins (TBDPs), which function in the uptake of substrates from the environment by many Gram-negative bacteria. The ten strains represent P. fluorescens, P. chlororaphis, and P. synxantha isolated from the phyllosphere, rhizosphere or soil. 14 to 45 TBDPs were identified in each strain, and phylogenetic analysis of the TBDPs identified five that are conserved across all ten genomes. The Photocycle of Bacteriophytochrome Is Initiated by Counterclockwise Chromophore Isomerization.

Photoactivation of bacteriophytochrome involves a cis–trans photoisomerization of a biliverdin chromophore, but neither the precise sequence of events nor the direction of the isomerization is known. Here, we used nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations on the photosensory protein dimer to resolve the isomerization mechanism in atomic detail. In our simulations the photoisomerization of the D ring occurs in the counterclockwise direction. On a subpicosecond time scale, the photoexcited chromophore adopts a short-lived intermediate with a highly twisted configuration stabilized by an extended hydrogen-bonding network.
