Artificial Social Ethics: Simulating Culture, Conflict, and Cooperation
2020
In recent years advances in computational modeling and social simulation technologies have enabled scientists to identify some of the conditions under which – and the mechanisms by which – conflict and cooperation within and across human cultures are likely to emerge. There are significant ethical concerns surrounding the increased capacity and growing use of such computer tools to guide public policy discussions. The purpose of this paper is to propose and promote an "artificial social ethics" approach to addressing these concerns and illustrate its application in relation to three agent-based models implemented within the Artificial Society Analytics Platform. We conclude with a brief dis…
The Challenge of Mutual Competence Building
2015
Mutual Competence Building has emerged as a key concept when working on this book with our colleagues at the University of Agder. In this conclusion we develop and explore the concept further in relation to sustainability. Our point of departure is the definition we presented in the introduction: mutual competence building is a conversation between scholars and societal and work life partner organisations about what sustainability, and efforts to create a sustainable society, might entail for distinct sectors.

Humour in EFL classrooms : a comparative case study between elementary and secondary school lessons
2014
Tutkimus on vertaileva, sillä tavoitteena on kuvailla oppilaiden luokka-asteen yhteyttä käytetyn huumorin määrään, huumorilajiin ja siihen onko huumori opettaja- vai oppilasaloitteista.
Airy-function approach to binary black hole merger waveforms: The fold-caustic diffraction model
2022
From numerical simulations of the Einstein equations, and also from gravitational wave observations, the gravitational wave signal from a binary black hole merger is seen to be simple and to possess certain universal features. The simplicity is somewhat surprising given that non-linearities of general relativity are thought to play an important role at the merger. The universal features include an increasing amplitude as we approach the merger, where transition from an oscillatory to a damped regime occurs in a pattern apparently oblivious to the initial conditions. We propose an Airy-function pattern to model the binary black hole (BBH) merger waveform, focusing on accounting for its simpl…

Transversal competences and character education in Latvia: needs analysis report
2018
The national report “Transversal competences and character education in Latvia: Needs analysis report” is a part of the transnational intellectual output 1 “Needs analysis report” elaborated within the Erasmus+ project “Supporting teachers for developing intra-personal competences and character education at school (ARETE CATALYST)”, 2017-1-LV01-KA201-035435. The research report is structured in four parts as follows: 1) A detailed description of transversal competences and character education in Latvia; 2) Case studies of best practices in Latvia; 3) Benchmarking of transversal competences and character education in UK and USA; 4) Developing pupils’ intrapersonal competencies and character …
Interfaces between coexisting phases in polymer mixtures: What can we learn from Monte Carlo simulations?
1999
Symmetric binary polymer mixtures are studied by Monte Carlo simulation of the bond fluctuation model, considering both interfaces between coexisting bulk phases and interfaces confined in thin films. It is found that the critical behavior of interfacial tension and width is compatible with that of the Ising model, as expected from the universality principle. In the strong segregation limit, only qualitative but not quantitative agreement with the self-consistent field (SCF) theory is found. It is argued that the SCF theory requires √ 6 X √D for short-range forces, in agreement with experiment.
