Methods of calculation for the T-matrix

1991

In the preceding section we have shown how the observables can be expressed in terms of the T-matrix elements or in terms of the multipole amplitudes OLλ(μjls) which contain all the relevant information on the dynamical properties of the system. For the calculation of these amplitudes a variety of different methods have been developed utilizing various kinds of approximations.

Tricritical universality in a two-dimensional spin fluid

1995

Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the tricritical point properties of a 2d spin fluid. Measurements of the scaling operator distributions are employed in conjunction with a finite-size scaling analysis to locate the tricritical point and determine the directions of the relevant scaling fields and their associated tricritical exponents. The scaling operator distributions and exponents are shown to match quantitatively those of the 2d Blume-Capel model, confirming that both models belong to the same universality class. Mean-field calculations of the tricritical point properties are also compared with the simulation measurements.

Information-flux approach to multiple-spin dynamics

2007

We introduce and formalize the concept of information flux in a many-body register as the influence that the dynamics of a specific element receive from any other element of the register. By quantifying the information flux in a protocol, we can design the most appropriate initial state of the system and, noticeably, the distribution of coupling strengths among the parts of the register itself. The intuitive nature of this tool and its flexibility, which allow for easily manageable numerical approaches when analytic expressions are not straightforward, are greatly useful in interacting many-body systems such as quantum spin chains. We illustrate the use of this concept in quantum cloning an…

Universal extra dimensions andZ→bb¯

2003

We study, at the one loop level, the dominant contributions from a single universal extra dimension to the process $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}b\overline{b}.$ By resorting to the gaugeless limit of the theory we explain why the result is expected to display a strong dependence on the mass of the top quark, not identified in the early literature. A detailed calculation corroborates this expectation, giving rise to a lower bound for the compactification scale which is comparable to that obtained from the $\ensuremath{\rho}$ parameter. An estimate of the subleading corrections is furnished, together with a qualitative discussion on the difference between the present results and thos…

Electromechanical properties of a disc‐type salient‐pole brushless DC motor with different pole numbers

2003

A brushless, permanent magnet, three‐phase disc‐type salient‐pole DC motor with co‐axial flux in the stator is considered. Electromechanical properties of a basic eight‐pole motor are compared with those for a 16‐pole one of the same volume, in order to contrast the two potential candidates for variable‐speed, low‐cost drives. As a basis of the comparative analysis, 3D FEM magnetic field modelling and circuit analysis considering an electronic commutator are employed. Increasing the number of poles results in unfavourable raising in the switching frequency. The eight‐pole motor construction has been shown in simulations to have higher efficiency and lower power losses than its 16‐pole count…

On the universality of void density profiles

2014

The massive exploitation of cosmic voids for precision cosmology in the upcoming dark energy experiments, requires a robust understanding of their internal structure, particularly of their density profile. We show that the void density profile is insensitive to the void radius both in a catalogue of observed voids and in voids from a large cosmological simulation. However, the observed and simulated voids display remarkably different profile shapes, with the former having much steeper profiles than the latter. Sparsity can not be the main reason for this discrepancy, as we demonstrate that the profile can be recovered with reasonable accuracy even with very sparse samples of tracers. On the…

Universality classes for wetting in two-dimensional random-bond systems

1991

Interface-unbinding transitions, such as those arising in wetting phenomena, are studied in two-dimensional systems with quenched random impurities and general interactions. Three distinct universality classes or scaling regimes are investigated using scaling arguments and extensive transfer-matrix calculations. Both the critical exponents and the critical amplitudes are determined for the weak- and the strong-fluctuation regime. In the borderline case of the intermediate-fluctuation regime, the asymptotic regime is not accessible to numerical simulations. We also find strong evidence for a nontrivial delocalization transition of an interface that is pinned to a line of defects.

Membrane potential of rat calvaria bone cells: dependence on temperature.

1990

The membrane potentials of bone cells derived from calvaria of new born rats was shown to be strongly dependent on temperature. When we lowered the temperature from 36 degrees C to 26 degrees C, cells with spontaneous resting membrane potentials (MP) of -80 to -50 mV depolarized (mean amplitude 8 mV; n = 33), and the membrane resistance increased by approximately 80% (n = 20). The temperature response depended on the actual MP, the reversal potential being in the range of -80 to -90 mV. With the application of ouabain (0.1-1 mmol/liter; n = 12), cells depolarized. Simultaneously, the reversal potential of the temperature response was shifted towards more positive values and approached the a…
