Renormalization-group analysis for the transition to chaos in Hamiltonian systems
2002
Abstract We study the stability of Hamiltonian systems in classical mechanics with two degrees of freedom by renormalization-group methods. One of the key mechanisms of the transition to chaos is the break-up of invariant tori, which plays an essential role in the large scale and long-term behavior. The aim is to determine the threshold of break-up of invariant tori and its mechanism. The idea is to construct a renormalization transformation as a canonical change of coordinates, which deals with the dominant resonances leading to qualitative changes in the dynamics. Numerical results show that this transformation is an efficient tool for the determination of the threshold of the break-up of…
‘Disability Gain’ and the Limits of Representing Alternative Beauty
2018
In this conversation, Ann Fox, Matthias Krings and Ulf Vierke debate the concept of ‘disability gain’ and the limits of representing alternative beauty. The concept demands that we regard disability inclusion as a resource gain, instead of a resource drain. While this approach complicates and questions the societal definition and devaluation of ‘disability,’ it also raises a number of debatable issues. For example, what happens when ‘disabled’ bodies are commodified in an attempt to represent so-called alternative beauty? The conversation shows that, while the stakes for the fashion-beauty industry in extending aesthetic norms, pluralizing beauty and mainstreaming diversity are high, it man…
Duties, Rules and Interpretations in Obligational Disputations
2001
An obligational disputation, as it was known in the Middle Ages, consisted basically of a sequence of propositions put forward by one person, called the opponent, and evaluated by another person, called the respondent. In the most typical variations of the technique, the sequence would begin with a special proposition, called the positum It was taken as the starting point, which the rest of the sequence would develop. The respondent had to accept the positum, if it was free from contradictions. Then he had to take into account in his later evaluations of the other propositions that he must at any time during the disputation grant the positum and anything following from it. The disputations …
To correct or not correct the erroneous utterances of children: teacher‐initiated organisation of repair in the L2 pre‐primary education classroom
2010
ABSTRACT The research reported on a qualitative study of feedback given in one Finnish pre‐primary education group which integrated English into the programme as a first foreign language. The study was based on the authentic video‐recorded observations of actual pre‐primary teaching sessions (N = 11 lessons). The findings suggested that the reactions of the teachers to child errors depended on the types of errors made by children. The study discussed the tension present in feedback giving when balancing between the aim of maintaining the early interest of children in language learning and the purpose of paying attention to correct ways of using the target language. The data were analysed by…

Effects of ions-releasing restorative materials on the dentine bonding longevity of modern universal adhesives after load-cycle and prolonged artific…
2019
This study aimed at evaluating the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and fractographic features of dentine-bonded specimens created using universal adhesives applied in etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etching (SE) mode in combination with modern ion-releasing resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC)-based materials after load cycling and artificial saliva aging.
