Upper thoracic-spine disc degeneration in patients with cervical pain.

2003

To study the relationship of upper thoracic spine degenerative disc contour changes on MR imaging in patients with neck pain. The relation between upper thoracic and cervical spine degenerative disc disease is not well established. One hundred and fifty-six patients referred with cervical pain were studied. There were 73 women and 77 men with a mean age of 48.6 +/- 14.6 years (range, 19 to 83 years). All MR studies were performed with a large 23-cm FOV covering at least from the body of T4 to the clivus. Discs were coded as normal, protrusion/bulge or extrusion.Degenerative thoracic disc contour changes were observed in 13.4% of patients with cervical pain. T2-3 was the most commonly affecte…

Is tubulin the sole antigen recognized by a putative anti-bursicon antibody?

1999

Abstract A 56-kDa polypeptide suspected to be the tanning hormone `bursicon' was analyzed using the monoclonal antibody (mAb) 01C10 of Song and Ma. We studied the beetle Tenebrio molitor, for which data on bursicon have been recently published. After purification by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of brain proteins, the immunoreactive 56-kDa polypeptide was trypsinated and microsequenced. The obtained sequences revealed a high homology with α- and β-tubulins. In a complementary study, immunoreactive clones were isolated, using the 01C10 mAb, from a library in expression vector obtained from Drosophila melanogaster head cDNAs. Again, the isolated clones were found, after cDNA sequencing,…

A central nervous system-focused treatment approach for people with frozen shoulder: protocol for a randomized clinical trial

2019

Background: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a musculoskeletal condition of poorly understood etiology that results in shoulder pain and large mobility deficits. Despite some physical therapy interventions, such as joint mobilization and exercise, having shown therapeutic benefit, a definitive treatment does not currently exist. The aim of this study will be to compare the effectiveness of a central nervous system (CNS)-directed treatment program versus a standard medical and physical therapy care program on outcomes in participants with FS. Methods/design: The study is a two-group, randomized clinical trial with blinding of participants and assessors. Participants will be recruited via referrals fr…

Potential of the Bacillus thuringiensis Toxin Reservoir for the Control of Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a Major Pest of Grape Plants▿

2006

ABSTRACT The potential of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry proteins to control the grape pest Lobesia botrana was explored by testing first-instar larvae with Cry proteins belonging to the Cry1, Cry2, and Cry9 groups selected for their documented activities against Lepidoptera. Cry9Ca, a toxin from B. thuringiensis , was the protein most toxic to L. botrana larvae, followed in decreasing order by Cry2Ab, Cry1Ab, Cry2Aa, and Cry1Ia7, with 50% lethal concentration values of 0.09, 0.1, 1.4, 3.2, and 8.5 μg/ml of diet, respectively. In contrast, Cry1Fa and Cry1JA were not active at the assayed concentration (100 μg/ml). In vitro binding and competition experiments showed that none of the toxins teste…

Transcriptional Activity and Nuclear Localization of Cabut, the Drosophila Ortholog of Vertebrate TGF-β-Inducible Early-Response Gene (TIEG) Proteins

2011

Background Cabut (Cbt) is a C2H2-class zinc finger transcription factor involved in embryonic dorsal closure, epithelial regeneration and other developmental processes in Drosophila melanogaster. Cbt orthologs have been identified in other Drosophila species and insects as well as in vertebrates. Indeed, Cbt is the Drosophila ortholog of the group of vertebrate proteins encoded by the TGF-s-inducible early-response genes (TIEGs), which belong to Sp1-like/Kruppel-like family of transcription factors. Several functional domains involved in transcriptional control and subcellular localization have been identified in the vertebrate TIEGs. However, little is known of whether these domains and fu…

Influence of geographical extent on typology- and model-based assessments of taxonomic completeness of river macroinvertebrates

2009

Summary 1. River InVertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS)-type predictive models are increasingly used to assess the biological condition of freshwaters, but management schemes may also be based on a priori groupings of similar water bodies (typologies) to control for natural variation in biota. The two approaches may lead to disagreements of the biological status of a site, depending on, for example, the spatial scale at which assessments are conducted. 2. We used data from 96 reference and 134 potentially impacted sites from Western and Central Finland to compare RIVPACS-type models and a simple size-based typology of rivers for the assessment of taxonomic completeness …

Zooplankton assemblages in a Mediterranean restored area: patterns and processes of colonization and establishment

2016

Trematodes in Mediterranean coastal habitats: Transmission, life cycles and detection Methods

2015
