Jets interacting with vegetation in the rotating LEGI platform

2019

Rivers and wastewater discharges flowing into lakes and coastal waters strongly affect aquatic ecosystems, based on their transport of turbulence, tracers and sediment particles. Mixing and spreading of outflows have an even greater impact when the receiving site is obstructed by vegetation canopies or mussel cultivation farms. Thus, a thorough knowledge of the interaction between effluents and receiving bodies is required to mitigate impacts and promote best environmental management practices, also following the 2015 EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

Formation processes at a high resolution Middle Paleolithic site: Cueva Antón (Murcia, Spain)

2013

Cueva Anton is a Middle Paleolithic rockshelter located in the valley of the River Mula (Murcia, Spain). The archeological investigation of the site, which began with salvage work in 1991, resumed in 2006 and is still ongoing, uncovered a succession spanning most of MIS 3 and MIS 4 (ca. 75–36 ka) and featuring a well preserved human occupation record. This paper presents the first information about site stratigraphy and site formation processes. Geoarcheological data collected in the field and through micromorphological observation show that the archeological succession at Cueva Anton is mainly composed of alluvial sediments, with thin intercalations of gravitational and slope material. The…

La démocratie alimentaire comme enjeu de capacitation territoriale : Étude de cas dans le Tournugeois

2023

This article, through a case study from the Plateforme d'Observation des projets et stratégies urbaines (POPSU) program in Tournus, questions the notion of food democracy and its link with territorial capability. The observation and analysis of the dynamics of this participatory research allow us to enrich the concept of food democracy by crossing it with other theoretical perspectives (in particular the capability approach). They also highlight certain conditions for its effectiveness and raise the question of the relationship between food democracy and public policy. Finally, they invite researchers working on these issues to adopt an involved posture.

Effects of forest regeneration on the structure of bird communities in northern Finland

1985

Breeding bird communities in five stages of secondary forest succession were studied in northeastern Finland in 1980–82. Three groups of communities were distinguished: open land, brush phase and forest communities, dominated by Motacilla alba and Oenanthe oenanthe, Phylloscopus trochilus and Anthus trivialis, Phylloscopus trochilus and Fringilla montifringilla, respectively. Pair density, number of species, biomass of adult birds and species diversity increased in the course of succession, none of these, however, monotonously. Average bird weight showed a decreasing trend although the variation was considerable. The degree of specialization in communities (measured by ratios derived from n…

The cranium ofPiscogavialis jugaliperforatus n.gen., n.sp. (Gavialidae, Crocodylia) from the Miocene of Peru

1998

The description of a new gavialid genus and species (Piscogavialis jugaliperforatus) from the Pisco Formation (Neogene) of the Sacaco Basin (southern Peru) is given. The Pisco Formation is well known for its high diversity of fossil vertebrates, but reptiles have not been described previously. The type specimen ofP. jugaliperforatus from the Pisco Formation is a well preserved complete skull of a large individual with an almost complete associated mandible and posteranial material.P. jugaliperforatus is referred to Gavialidae, primarily because of the presence of key characters in the occipital region.

Expression of fibronectin splice variants and oncofetal glycosylated fibronectin in the synovial membranes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and …

2002

The aim of this study was to define and compare the expression of fibronectin (Fn) isoforms in synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).Using monoclonal antibodies specific for total Fn, extra domain (ED)-A Fn, ED-B Fn, and oncofetal glycosylated Fn, we studied the expression of the Fn isoforms in synovium. Furthermore, in situ hybridization for the detection of ED-B Fn mRNA including a double labeling technique for the detection of cell type was applied.Strong expression of total Fn, ED-A Fn, oncofetal glycosylated Fn and, to a lesser extent, ED-B Fn could be demonstrated in the synovial lining layer in both RA and OA. Stromal and vessel expression…

A bio-imitating approach to fabricate an artificial matrix for cartilage tissue engineering using magnesium-polyphosphate and hyaluronic acid

2016

Here we describe an artificial cartilage-like material based on a hyaluronic acid-Mg/Ca-polyphosphate paste (HA-aMg/Ca-polyP-p) that is fabricated from a water-soluble Na-salt of energy-rich inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) and soluble hyaluronic acid in the presence of water-insoluble CaCO3. The resulting material, after conversion of Na-polyP into the less soluble Mg/Ca-salt consisting of amorphous Mg/Ca-polyP microparticles, was found to mimic the physiological cartilage tissue and to bind Ca2+ ions present in the synovial fluid. After the Mg2+/Ca2+ exchange and water extrusion, the polyP becomes more stable, but is still susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage by the alkaline phosphatase (ALP…

Post-mortem enamel surface texture alteration during taphonomic processes—do experimental approaches reflect natural phenomena?

2022

Experimental approaches are often used to better understand the mechanisms behindand consequences of post-mortem alteration on proxies for diet reconstruction.Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is such a dietary proxy, using dental wearfeatures in extant and extinct taxa to reconstruct feeding behaviour and mechanicalfood properties. In fossil specimens especially, DMTA can be biased by post-mortemalteration caused by mechanical or chemical alteration of the enamel surface. Herewe performed three different dental surface alteration experiments to assess the effectof common taphonomic processes by simplifying them: (1) tumbling in sedimentsuspension to simulate fluvial transport, (2) s…
