On the flexural vibrations of sandwich plates

1995

A simplified approach to sandwich plate free vibrations, based on the superposition method, can provide approximations to the lowest modes for various boundary conditions, showing a characteristic influence of the bending-shear stiffness ratio.

Improved noncontact optical sensor for detection of glucose concentration and indication of dehydration level.

2014

The ability to extract different bio-medical parameters from one single wristwatch device can be very applicable. The wearable device that is presented in this paper is based on two optical approaches. The first is the extraction and separation of remote vibration sources and the second is the rotation of linearly polarized light by certain materials exposed to magnetic fields. The technique is based on tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckles produced in the wrist when being illuminated by a laser beam. Change in skin’s temporal vibration profile together with change in the magnetic medium that is generated by time varied glucose concentration caused these temporal chan…

Acousto-plasmonic coupling in engineered metal nanocomposites

2010

This work shows the production of self-assembled elongated nano-objects embedded in an oxide host oriented perpendicular to the substrate and their acousto-plasmonic dynamics. Electromagnetic “hot spots” are created that activate anomalous Raman vibrational modes.

Acoustic vibrations of embedded spherical nanoparticles

2005

Abstract A solid-matrix-embedded spherical nanoparticle has acoustic vibrational frequencies which are shifted and damped relative to modes of a free sphere. Not only the longitudinal plane wave acoustic impedances, but also the Poisson ratios of nanoparticle and matrix are important in determining the Q-factor of the “breathing” mode, for which frequencies and Q-factors with different material combinations are presented. High matrix sound speed (e.g. silica, titania, alumina, diamond) increases Q.

Broadband Fabry–Pérot Resonator From Zerodur for Laser Stabilisation Below 1KHZ Linewidth With < 100 HZ/S Drift and Reduced Sensitivity to Vibrati…

2015

Abstract Here we demonstrate the results of creating a two-mirror Fabry-Pérot resonator (FPR) that allows achieving the spectral width of a stabilised laser line below 1 kHz. It had low expansion Zerodur spacer and broadband high reflectance mirrors (99.85% in the range of 630 to 1140 nm). FPR was vertically mid-plane mounted for reduced sensitivity to vibrations and included in two shields inside a vacuum chamber to lower temperature fluctuations. Peltier element was used for temperature stabilisation at zero-expansion temperature. Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique was applied. The signal from FPR was compared to ultra-stable signal (of about 1 Hz linewidth) to form a beat note signal. For…

Criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and energy parameters of damage in the critical plane

2005

In this paper generalized criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and strain energy density parameters in the critical plane have been discussed. The proposed criteria reduce multiaxial state of stress to the equivalent uniaxial tension–compression or alternating bending. Relations between the coefficients occurring in the considered criteria have been derived. Thus, it is possible to take into account fatigue properties of materials under simple loading states during determination of the multiaxial fatigue life. Presented models have successfully correlated fatigue lives of cast iron GGG40 and steel 18G2A specimens under constant amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase lo…

A critical plane approach based on energy concepts: application to biaxial random tension-compression high-cycle fatigue regime

1999

Abstract In this paper the energy parameter, defined for random loadings, is analysed. Under uniaxial loading this parameter distinguishes between the strain energy density for tension (positive) and the strain energy density for compression (negative). As a consequence, if there is no mean component in the random loading, we obtain a random history of strain (elastic and plastic) energy density with zero expected value. Under multiaxial loadings the normal strain energy density in the critical plane (i.e. the plane of the maximum damage) is understood as the energy parameter. The history of strain energy density is schematized with use of the rain-flow algorithm. Fatigue damage is accumula…

Imaging of photonic nanopatterns by scanning near-field optical microscopy

2002

We define photonic nanopatterns of a sample as images recorded by scanning near-field optical microscopy with a locally excited electric dipole as a probe. This photonic nanopattern can be calculated by use of the Green’s dyadic technique. Here, we show that scanning near-field optical microscopy images of well-defined gold triangles taken with the tetrahedral tip as a probe show a close similarity to the photonic nanopattern of this nanostructure with an electric dipole at a distance of 15 nm to the sample and tilted 45° with respect to the scanning plane.

Prediction of Dissipative Properties of Flax Fibers Reinforced Laminates by Vibration Analysis

2016

This study proposes an experimental-numeric method to identify the viscoelastic properties of flax fibres reinforced composite laminate (flax/epoxide). The used method consists in identifying the evolutions of both loss factor and stiffness when vibrational frequency changes. In this way, several free-free symmetrically guided beams are excited on a dynamic range of 10 to 4000 Hz with sweep sine excitation focused around the 4-first’s modes. Fractional derivative Zener model is used to identify the on-axis ply complex moduli and describe the laminate dissipative linear behavior with the classical laminate theory. Results obtained on a quasi-isotropic laminate show that this model adequately…

Demonstration of remote optical measurement configuration that correlates to glucose concentration in blood

2010

An optical approach allowing the extraction and the separation of remote vibration sources has recently been proposed. The approach has also been applied for medical related applications as blood pressure and heart beats monitoring. In this paper we demonstrate its capability to monitor glucose concentration in blood stream. The technique is based on the tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckle produced in human skin (wrist) when being illuminated by a laser beam. A temporal change in skin’s vibration profile generated due to blood pulsation is analyzed for estimating the glucose concentration. Experimental tests that were carried out in order to verify the proposed appro…
