IL COSTITUZIONALISMO VITTORIANO TRA LIBERTÀ E IMPERO

2020

Victorian constitutionalism carries out the political premises of the Glorious Revolution, enshrining the definitive transition from the constitutional monarchy to the parliamentary one: the choice of the Prime Minister is taken away from the royal prerogative and determined by the confidence of the elective chamber, to which the Cabinet is responsible. Historical precedents, which are sometimes fortuitous, have codified a practice that would have been a model for western constitutionalism. And this is in spite of the contradictions of an era that takes its name from Queen Victoria, in which a vast colonial empire is the other side of the coin of domestic freedom, and in which poverty and e…

"The wrathful sunset glared...": The Krakatoa Sunsets in Victorian Science and Art

2020

The eruption of Krakatoa on August 27, 1883 was an event both tragic and spectacular. Thousands of lives were lost; sea waves and atmospheric disturbances were detected around the globe. Billions of tons of volcanic ash were thrown into the atmosphere producing multi-coloured sunsets caused by the scattering of light by aerosol particles. The paper discusses the ways in which these so-called Krakatoa sunsets, which were experienced by most of the world, were reflected in Victorian scientific and artistic discourse. The accounts included in the section “Descriptions of the Unusual Twilight Glows in Various Parts of the World, in 1883–84” of the Royal Society report The Eruption of Krakatoa a…

L’esilio al femminile. Neue Frauen oltreoceano

2020

The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…
