Video-Based Depression Detection Using Local Curvelet Binary Patterns in Pairwise Orthogonal Planes

2016

International audience; Depression is an increasingly prevalent mood disorder. This is the reason why the field of computer-based depression assessment has been gaining the attention of the research community during the past couple of years. The present work proposes two algorithms for depression detection, one Frame-based and the second Video-based, both employing Curvelet transform and Local Binary Patterns. The main advantage of these methods is that they have significantly lower computational requirements, as the extracted features are of very low dimensionality. This is achieved by modifying the previously proposed algorithm which considers Three-Orthogonal-Planes, to only Pairwise-Ort…

Exploring translation strategies in video game localization

2012

This paper addresses the issue of video game localisation focusing on the different strategies to be used from the point of view of Translation Studies. More precisely, the article explores the possible relation between the translation approaches used in the field and the different genres or textual typologies of video games. As the narrative techniques and the story lines of video games have become more complex and well-developed, the adaptation of games entails a serious challenge for translators. Video games have evolved into multimodal and multidimensional products and new approaches and insights are required when studying the adaptation of games into different cultures. Electronic ente…

Shift- and scale-invariant recognition of contour objects with logarithmic radial harmonic filters.

2008

The phase-only logarithmic radial harmonic (LRH) filter has been shown to be suitable for scale-invariant block object recognition. However, an important set of objects is the collection of contour functions that results from a digital edge extraction of the original block objects. These contour functions have a constant width that is independent of the scale of the original object. Therefore, since the energy of the contour objects decreases more slowly with the scale factor than does the energy of the block objects, the phase-only LRH filter has difficulties in the recognition tasks when these contour objects are used. We propose a modified LRH filter that permits the realization of a shi…

Performance evaluation of different techniques to estimate subjective quality in live video streaming applications over LTE-Advance mobile networks

2018

Abstract Current mobile service providers are offering Gigabit Internet access over LTE-Advanced networks. Traditional services, such as live video streaming, over wired networks are feasible on these networks. However different aspects should be taken into account due to the fast changing network conditions as well as the constrained resources of the mobile phones, in order to provide a good subjective video quality in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS). Our goal is to estimate and predict this subjective metric without information or reference from the original video, known as Non Reference approach. This approach is important for the Service Provider from a practical point of view, becaus…

Microangiectasias: Structural regulators of lymphocyte transmigration

2003

The migration of lymphocytes into inflammatory tissue requires the migrating cell to overcome mechanical forces produced by blood flow. A generally accepted hypothesis is that these forces are overcome by a multistep sequence of adhesive interactions between lymphocytes and endothelial cells. This hypothesis has been recently challenged by results demonstrating wall shear stress on the order of 20 dyn/cm 2 in vivo and infrequent lymphocyte–endothelial adhesion at wall shear stress >1–2 dyn/cm 2 in vitro . Here, we show that lymphocyte slowing and transmigration in the skin is associated with microangiectasias, i.e., focal structural dilatations of microvessel segments. Microangiectasias…

“Sexuality does not belong to the game” : Discourses in Overwatch Community and the Privilege of Belonging

2022

Players can experience a sense of belonging to videogames and the transmedial worlds surrounding them. There nevertheless exist ongoing negotiations over who has the right to belong to these spaces. Multiple works addressing related issues have highlighted that white heterosexual men still maintain the position of power in the majority of game communities (e.g., Consalvo, 2012; Paul, 2018). This position can translate into an ease of belonging while others can find themselves struggling for the right to belong. We examine the transmedial world of Overwatch, an online game, as a place of belonging and non-belonging. Since the game’s launch, two characters have been revealed as queer. In cont…

Real-time video transmission in UMTS

2001

Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2001 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Universal Mobile Telecommunication System is denoted as a 3rd cellular system and has been designed with the objective to be a system with global coverage. With the major improvement of in bandwidth capability the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System will be able to support real time multimedia services. This thesis starts with a presentation of the possible video services that can be exploited in third generation cellular systems. Video services are known to be bandwidth consuming and have rigid requirements to the real time requirements. Though the major increase in available bandwidth in the…

Data Augmentation for Pipeline-Based Speech Translation

2020

International audience; Pipeline-based speech translation methods may suffer from errors found in speech recognition system output. Therefore, it is crucial that machine translation systems are trained to be robust against such noise. In this paper, we propose two methods for parallel data augmentation for pipeline-based speech translation system development. The first method utilises a speech processing workflow to introduce errors and the second method generates commonly found suffix errors using a rule-based method. We show that the methods in combination allow significantly improving speech translation quality by 1.87 BLEU points over a baseline system.
