LORIA, PITRÈ, VILLARI: IMPERTINENZE, RESISTENZE, CORRISPONDENZE

2019

This work explores the contradictory relationship of intense scientific rivalry between Giuseppe Pitré and Lamberto Loria. To do this, the author analyzes the correspondence collections of the Historical Archives of the “Giuseppe Pitrè” Ethnographic Museum of Palermo and of the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions in Rome, crossing them with other sources already analyzed in previous studies.

A binary genetic approach to characterize TRPM5 cells in mice

2015

International audience; Transient receptor potential channel subfamily M member 5 (TRPM5) is an important downstream signaling component in a subset of taste receptor cells making it a potential target for taste modulation. Interestingly, TRPM5 has been detected in extra-oral tissues; however, the function of extra-gustatory TRPM5-expressing cells is less well understood. To facilitate visualization and manipulation of TRPM5-expressing cells in mice, we generated a Cre knock-in TRPM5 allele by homologous recombination. We then used the novel TRPM5-IRES-Cre mouse strain to report TRPM5 expression by activating a tau GFP transgene. To confirm faithful coexpression of tau GFP and TRPM5 we gene…

Short-term and long-term results of cardiac surgery in elderly and very elderly patients

2011

Objective: Cardiac operations in elderly patients are increasingly frequent and imply major clinical, ethical, and economic issues. Operative and 5-year results of cardiac operations in patients aged 79 years or more are known in limited series, and a debate is ongoing on the appropriateness of selection of patients for surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our experience in 6802 patients aged 79 years or more who had received a cardiac operation. Surgical candidates were selected according to functional status, crude operative risk, and social context and were managed according to a multimodality protocol. Results: Mean age was 82 years and surgery was nonelective in 1613 cases (23…

Mercenari italici in viaggio verso l’entroterra della Sicilia? Il contributo delle evidenze numismatiche e archeologiche

2014

The subject of the contribution is the analysis of a series of numismatic evidences, coming from Amorella, Monte Raffe, Castellazzo di Marianopoli, Santa Caterina di Villarmosa, through which it is possible to observe how, from the mid-4th century BC, the hinterland had become a veritable enclave of mercenaries. These are allogeneic groups, who presumably arrived in Sicily from the Italian peninsula to serve as soldiers in the ranks of the Dionysian armies, and were subsequently exhorted or chose to settle permanently in the indigenous communities of the interior
