The paper analyses the artistic decorations present in the first eight rural villages built in Sicily in 1940 following the law on the colonisation of the Sicilian rural areas. After a brief introduction on the importance of the relationship between art and architecture during Fascism in Italy, the most common types of intervention are presented. The Madonie district, in the inner Sicily, is composed of 21 villages, custodians of heritage, traditions, and values that constitute the identity of this area, now exclusively entrusted to the collective memory of an increasingly elderly and inactive population. The Madonie district, one of the 72 pilot areas of the National Strategy for Inner Areas in Italy in the center of Sicily, is composed by 21 municipalities that really have a great potential, due to their historical background and natural landscape, but it needs new strategies to emerge. In my dissertation I have traced novel routes to village research by examining the transformation of the villages through the concepts of temporality and materiality. My research questions are: What kind of temporal trajectories have formed the villages? What kind of things, events, processes or connections have in the course of time been part of the village? I examine the transformations having taken place along various trajectories and focus on how the past and the future are related in the present in certain moments. Presently, the European Union strategies aim at strengthening the rural areas that are characterized by a deep depopulation, people aging, and a weak employment market. In these "marginalized" areas, the urban regeneration process may be assisted by the creation of smart villages, realities that will cooperate and create innovative small towns.
