The Binding of Xanthophylls to the Bulk Light-harvesting Complex of Photosystem II of Higher Plants

The pigment composition of the light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) of higher plants is highly conserved. The bulk complex (LHCIIb) binds three xanthophyll molecules in combination with chlorophyll (Chl) a and b. The structural requirements for binding xanthophylls to LHCIIb have been examined using an in vitro reconstitution procedure. Reassembly of the monomeric recombinant LHCIIb was performed using a wide range of native and nonnative xanthophylls, and a specific requirement for the presence of a hydroxy group at C-3 on a single β-end group was identified. Assembly of the Major Light-harvesting Chlorophyll-a/b Complex

The major light-harvesting chlorophyll-a/b complex in most higher plants contains three carotenoids, lutein, neoxanthin, and violaxanthin. How these pigments are assembled into the complex during its biogenesis is largely unknown. Here we show that neoxanthin but not lutein can dissociate from the fully assembled complex. Its equilibrium binding constant in a detergent system (0.1% n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside) was determined to be > or = 10(6) m(-1). Contribution to the Knowledge of Dermatophytic Invasion of Hair

We have used the scanning electron microscope to investigate the changes that occur in scalp hair during infection with Trichophyton violaceum . We provide information on the morphology of these dermatophytes and present evidence that their hyphae dig tunnel-like burrows into the hair shaft, dissociating hair into keratin fibrils.

Multiple Short Term Effects of UV-B Radiation on the Diatom Phaeodactylum Tricornutum

Increases in UV-B irradiance lead to many specific damaging effects upon the plants including damage of the thylakoid membrane, partial inhibition of PS II, decrease of chloroplast ATPase activity, loss of enzyme activities in the calvin cycle and alterations in pigment synthesis (1). Under natural conditions enhanced UV-B light is always accompanied by high intensities of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). Damaging effects due to photoinhibitory PAR and UV-B light which lead to several oxygen radical species (2) could be reduced by photoprotection mechanisms. Parity violation energy of biomolecules - III: RNA

2006

The energy of parity-violation associated with a typical DNA double helix is estimated with ab initio techniques. It is shown that weak-nuclear interactions do not favor the formation of the double helices found in nature. Possible implications regarding the potential effect of parity-violation interactions on the evolution of biological homochirality are discussed.

From Ligularia atroviolacea, four new eremophilendiolides, 8 beta-hydroxy-eremophil-3,7 (11)-dien-12,8 alpha(14,6 alpha)-diolide (1), 8 beta-methoxy-eremophil-3,7(11)-dien-12,8 alpha(14,6 alpha)-diolide (2), 8 alpha-hydroxy-eremophil-3,7(11)-dien-12,8 beta(14,6 alpha)-diolide (3) and eremophil-3,7(11),8-trien-12,8 (14,6 alpha)-diolide (4), as well as a known diolide (5) were isolated. Charge-dependent flow and the search for the chiral magnetic wave in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

We report on measurements of a charge-dependent flow using a novel three-particle correlator with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and discuss the implications for observation of local parity violation and the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in heavy-ion collisions. Charge-dependent flow is reported for different collision centralities as a function of the event charge asymmetry. While our results are in qualitative agreement with expectations based on the CMW, the nonzero signal observed in higher harmonics correlations indicates a possible significant background contribution.
