Redrawing the city and its historical transformations: two examples in Palermo

2015

The representation area is nowaday called upon to face new challenges for new computer technologies that have developed over the last few years. Visual communication and multimedia language experienced a radical change: representation and visualization, thought and image are based on the branch of communication and therefore on the trasmission of knowledge that cannot be separated from the interdisciplinarity. Digital imagery challenges more and more analog imagery, creating a scene that is independent from the constructed reality and sometimes reaching to overlap and merge with it: therefore the representation is no longer just a repetition of the real, but becomes itself an autonomous rea…

Palermo: Virtual urban reconfiguration of some ancient squares and quarters

2013

Hulot's Selinunte: digital analysis and virtual reconstruction

2021

Some drawings feature a powerful evocative nature, capable of presenting a truthful vision that can replace, in collective imagination, the actual expression of reality. This is the case of the "restorations" of Selinunte proposed by the French architect Jean-Louis Hulot (Paris 1871 -1959) which still today evoke the splendours of the ancient city. Thanks to his accurate surveys and inspired by the visit to the remains of further ancient cities such as Priene, Tera, Delos, and Pompeii, Hulot proposed in his watercolour drawings a vision of a "living" city, rendered at the height of its architectural and social magnificence. The paper presents a study on digital solutions that combine data f…

Rebuilding Palermo in the Middle Ages: A Virtual Approach

2020

A long sequence of demolitions, transformations, interpretative restorations eliminated or compromised a series of civil and religious buildings built between the XII and early XVI centuries in Palermo. For many of these architectures, graphic, photographic and documentary evidence exists and can be found. Within an extensive project of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, based on the collaboration between different disciplines, we intend to offer an essay of the possible results that the synergy between historical research and representation can offer. Chosen case is a fifteenth-century civil building located in the San Francesco district, of which some fragments r…

Experiments on the Virtual City: Three-Dimensional Reconfigurations of Missing, Never Realized or Destroyed Urban Areas

2011

We present two works on the "Virtual City" held at Palermo. They are about the three-dimensional reconfiguration of urban places that show evidence of "invisible" architecture, this is because in one case there were ancient monuments now destroyed, or in another case projects designed for the urban void and never made. The aim is to involve new forms of communication for the development of cultural tourism.

Castellaccio of Monreale: From the Survey to the Visualisation of Virtual Reconstructions

2023

On Monte Caputo near Monreale stands a castle, presumably built in the twelfth century. The paper presents the first results of a still in progress survey activity, carried out on the entire monument using laser scanning and photogram-metric methods. This activity was carried out as part of a scientific agreement stipu-lated between the University of Palermo, Department of Architecture and the Club Alpino Siciliano, owner of the Castle. The graphic restitution of the survey provided new information and unpublished images of the castle. It was then possible to formu-late hypotheses on the virtual reconstruction of lost configurations. This was achiev-able thanks to the survey analytical read…

La memoria fotografica dell’architettura : restituzioni prospettiche e ricostruzioni

2023

This book explores perspective restitution from photographs for the reconstruction of buildings and urban sites that no longer exist or have suffered many alterations over time. Digital drawing and modelling tools overcome many of the limitations that, in the past, made perspective restitution from photographs inaccurate and inconvenient. Traditional drawing tools made perspective restitution from photographs difficult, especially when vanishing points appeared at a great distance from the image frame. The results of perspective restitution were either 1D or 2D objects, i.e. points, segments, angles, planar figures and profiles, that were revolved into the picture plane. By contrast, digita…

From aerial survey to representation and visualization: the Temple G of Selinunte

2022

The paper reports the outputs of a research work focused on the segmentation of meshes generated from aerial photogrammetric survey, aiming at the implementation of a database integrated in a web-based Information System developed with 3D-Hop technology, that uses models as the access point to information data. Segmentation is a relevant topic in cultural heritage documentation, since it is the a pre-requisite for the development of systems that connect information data to 3D models. The chosen case study is the Doric Temple G of Selinunte, an archaeological site in southern Sicily. Temple G, one of the biggest Doric Temples of Magna Graecia, it is today a huge heap of ruins, probably due t…

A virtual reconfiguration of two destroyed neighborhoods in the Old Town of Palermo

2018

The proposed contribution deals with the topic of virtual three-dimensional reconstructions on an urban scale. The choice was oriented on significant samples of city portions that over the centuries have undergone substantial transformations or distortions: the aim is to reconstruct their history backwards, starting from the current survey and using the tools of virtual representation to reconfigure the forms of the past and tell their events. From here comes the idea to create, for pieces, a hypertextual study of the urban image of Palermo: the theme of the transformation of the city, of change and of complexity, opens up differentiated research paths. The hypertext choice was almost obvio…
