The Cathedral of Palermo : from survey to historic interpretation

The Cathedral of Palermo was built by the Norman Kings, in the place where a mosque had been erected by the muslim governors of Sicily. The church has many features recalling the norman churches in northern France and in England, whilst some others are due to the contamination of norman, muslim and byzantine culture, that is peculiar of the so-called “arab-norman” architecture of medieval Sicily. In the XVIth century the Cathedral has been enriched by additions that did not affect its medieval features: a portico and a sacristy on the southern front, a sculptural decoration in the main apse. Virtual Museum Net

A project named ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” is presented, whose objective is to provide an unitary image of the archaeological heritage of Calabria (a Southern Italian region), through Computer Technology, Multimedia Designing and Virtual Reconstructions. The project aims to encourage the technological transfer of the most advanced researches in the exploitation and conservation sector of the Cultural Heritage. The ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” project is included in the context of Knowledge Media Design for Museums. This project links the museum scenery and multimedia, in order to use technology as system of representation.

Surveying, Analysis and 3D Modeling in Archaeological Virtual Reconstruction. The inner colonnade of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte.

This paper is focused on the virtual reconstruction of a portion of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte, as a case study for the definition of a method of virtual anastylosis and reconstruction of collapsed colonnades in archaeological contexts. Reconstruction is based on the combination of historical research, archaeological analysis, digital surveying, image-based modeling and laser scanning methods. The complexity of the ruins of the temple suggested a thorough archaeological analysis of the fragments of the inner colonnade of the naos. Thanks to recent technological developments in 3D surveys, computer graphics and virtual reality, new scenarios have been opened for the documentation and enhancement of ancient sculptures. The Nymphaeum of the Tritons at Hierapolis of Phrygia is a monumental fountain of the Roman period with an imposing marble façade. Within the activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission the Nymphaeum is currently being studied by a team from the University of Messina with the goal of understanding its original layout and its history. This article focuses on the 3D virtual reconstruction of the first restoration project of the cathedral of San Maria in Iglesias (first half of 16th century). A complex work of renovation of the old medieval temple, which likely was meant to radically transform the presbytery of the church and to replace the previous timber roof truss of the nave with a simple ribbed vaults, as several clues seem to suggest. La restituzione prospettica appartiene di diritto al corpus disciplinare della geometria descrittiva, come problema inverso della prospettiva. In passato tale tecnica è stata utilizzata ben poche volte per la ricostruzione da immagini fotografiche di architetture e opere d’arte perdute; gli strumenti digitali per la rappresentazione offrono però l’opportunità di recuperare la restituzione prospettica come strumento efficace per la ricostruzione di monumenti perduti ritratti in foto d’epoca.
