Virtual reality as a recovering environment - Implications for design principles
2020
In this study, a simulated, VR-based environment was built and analyzed to explore if a VR environment can possess recovering effects. 61 university students tested a VR application depicting a forest and answered survey questions about the experience. The results showed that VR-environment can indeed have recovering effects. Moreover, when comparing to previous studies in real forests, the recovery effects were at similar levels. The study results suggest that as the VR-based environments can possess recovery effects, they can work as recovery environments at schools or similar environments. The study results offer implications for the designers and propose design principles to build recov…
Palaeontological Virtual Congress: A new way to make science
2019
On the first month of 2018, one of the authors (VDC) of this preface had an interesting idea: to hold a virtual congress. At first, he did not know of the existence of this kind of congress, but a quick internet search showed him that there were some examples in the fields of medicine and veterinary medicine; however, it had never been done in palaeontology. For that reason, with the help of other co-workers from the Universitat de València, Museo Paleontológico de Alpuente and Museu Valencià d’Historia Natural, we decided to undertake this adventure. The Quality of Service Issue in Virtual Environments
2011
Networked virtual environments (NVEs) have become a major trend in distributed computing, mainly due to the enormous popularity of multi-player online games in the entertainment industry. Nowadays, NVE systems are considered as the supporting technology for many networked and virtual organizations (NVO) (Singhal & Zyda, 1999), especially to those classified within the field of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), where networked computer can be seen as a standard to provide the technological means to support the team design (Ott & Nastansky, 1997). These highly interactive systems simulate a virtual world where multiple users share the same scenario. The system renders the im…

A mobile agent tool for resource discovery
2004
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a mobile agent based tool for arranging communities whose members want to share computing resources. Such a tool enables community members to arrange their own parallel virtual machine, using resources available within the community. Mobile agents are used to search among available addresses inside the community, and are instructed to select the ones which correspond to the users' requirements. The agent is the key component of the system, because it takes care of the server availability test and of the decision on whether to include them into the virtual machine, according to the user's requirements. The database acts as an intermediary between the …
The Web Computer and Its Operating System: A New Approach for Creating Web Applications
2019
Web applications require not only more sophisticated infrastructure than traditional single-PC applications, but also a different way of thinking, where network-specific aspects have to be considered. In this paper, we introduce the web computer concept, which factors out network-related issues and provides an illusion of a single computer with directly attached CPUs, memory, and I/O devices. By assuming the web computer and its open operating system (webAppOS) as a target platform for web applications, developers can preserve the same level of thinking as when developing classical desktop applications. With this approach, which corresponds to the physiology of the human brain, web applicat…
virtual communities, social networks and resistant fragments: young sicilian gays’ identity counter-attack
2002
Society is made of communications and representations: the core of its dynamics is culture and its patterns. Human beings are the authors of this significant web, i.e. culture; they are the authors and the victims at the same time. Social exclusions as norms and values — an ice–cream as a porn movie — are embedded in this culture web, as the anthropologist Clifford Geertz would say; and culture is the nature, the most appropriate environment of human interactions. A human being, her feelings, thoughts, dogma, creations, his/her own physical expression become a matter of culture, representations and perceptions. She creates paradise and hell, she is her own angel, her own devil. Sexual moral…
Toward a virtual reconstruction of an antique three-dimensional marble puzzle
2017
International audience; Abstract | Introduction | Related Work | Acquisition Setup, Proposed Prototype: Calibration and Visibility | Preprocessing of Scanned Three-Dimensional Fragment Data | Processing of Scanned Three-Dimensional Surface Data: Matching | Conclusion and Future Works | Appendices | Acknowledgments | ReferencesAbstract. The reconstruction of broken objects is an important field of research for many applications, such as art restoration, surgery, forensics, and solving puzzles. In archaeology, the reconstruction of broken artifacts is a very time-consuming task due to the handling of fractured objects, which are generally fragile. However, it can now be supported by three-dim…
Dispositif virtuel d'aide à la chirurgie de l'épaule
2008
The goal of this research is to design a virtual reality prototype to assit an orthopedic surgeon during the replacement of the glenohumeral joint by prosthesis. This system aims to optimize the movements of prosthesized shoulder joint from a choice of various scenarios of pose. These works encompasses several topics such as : orthopedic surgery, image analysis, computer graphics and virtual reality. The chosen process includes a phase of modelling of the bony part of the articulation by simple geometric forms, this model is parameterized from radios or CT scans ; a phase of simulation of the movements of healthy glenohumeral joint ; nally the phase of simulation of cutting and drilling wit…
NoC based virtualized FPGA as cloud Services
2016
International audience; Web-based applications are increasingly demanding many computationally intensive services. On the other hand, FPGA-based hardware accelerators(HwAcc) provide good performance in accelerating computationally intensive applications. In addition, some FPGAs support a dynamic partial reconfig-uration (DPR) techniques to virtualize and share the FPGA underlying hardware resources in time multiplexing during run-time to save resource and power consumption. Integrating FPGA in a cloud environment is an indispensable way to improve efficiency and provide acceleration services to demanding users. More importantly, in recent years it was proved that FPGA resources deployed in …
