The upgraded HADES trigger and data acquisition system
2011
The HADES experiment is a High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer located at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. Recently, its trigger and data acquisition system was upgraded. The main goal was to substantially increase the event rate capability by a factor of up to 20 to reach 100 kHz in light and 20 kHz in heavy ion reaction systems. The total data rate written to storage is about 400 MByte/s in peak.In this context, the complete read-out system was exchanged to FPGA-based platforms using optical communication. For data transport a general-purpose real-time network protocol was developed to meet the strong requirements of the system. In particular, trigger information has to reach all front-end …
SmartARP: merging IP and MAC addressing for low-cost gigabit Ethernet networks
1999
Abstract Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is one of the key TCP/IP stack protocols, used on LANs to map 32 bit IP addresses into 48 bit hardware addresses. Regular ARP uses MAC layer broadcasts to perform the mapping. In this paper a new server-based ARP extension (smartARP) is proposed, which allows the extension of ARP functionality beyond a single MAC layer broadcast domain. Compared to regular IP router, smartARP together with simple broadcast-filtering switches presents a low-cost alternative for forwarding packets between MAC layer broadcast domains. SmartARP is transparent to existing IP hosts, operates independent of LAN speed, and scales for big networks.
Switched Ethernet Networking over LEO Satellite
2005
Satellite onboard switching capabilities, and their possibility to enable "over-the-air" networks, are a strongly innovative achievement of modern satellite communication. The exploitation of satellite networking is especially relevant in the case of low Earth orbit satellites (LEO), where the reduced latency makes a LEO mesh network highly appealing and competitive with terrestrial solutions also in terms of performance. However, while the idea of a LEO mesh network is well understood, we are far from an ultimate answer on which is the best and more appropriate networking solution for moving LEO satellite network nodes. This paper promotes the adoption of existing layer-2 networking soluti…
European Universities: Forthem e la mobilità virtuale
2022
The paper deals with the European Universities program and the various projects funded with the participation of Italian universities. …
Focus and models of evaluation of the e-learning
2003
The aim of this article is to present the state of arts about e-learning evaluation. Different evaluative approaches, different models, tools and experiencies are showed, in order to determine the quality of virtual learning. Two main approaches are showed: partial evaluation, with emphasis in some aspects of e-learning (materials, technology resources, teaching, etc.) and global evaluation, that uses management quality models and the practice of benchmarking.
Effectiveness of Virtual Reality for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Evidence-Based Systematic Review
2018
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disease that is specially characterized by impairments in social communication and social skills. ASD has a high prevalence in children, affecting 1 in 160 subjects. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as an effective tool for intervention in the health field. Different recent papers have reviewed the VR-based treatments in ASD, but they have an important limitation because they only use clinical databases and do not include important technical indexes such as the Web of Science index or the Scimago Journal & Country Rank. To our knowledge, this is the first contribution that has carried out an evidence-based systematic review includin…
SETUP OF VIRTUAL EXPERIMENTS AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CONVENTIONAL THERMOECONOMIC DIAGNOSIS OF MULTIPLE FAULTS IN AIR-CONDENSED ROOFTOP SYSTEMS
2012
The diagnosis of soft faults in vapor compression cooling systems is a crucial activity, since malfunctions may provoke heavy degradation in plant performance and increase the power consumption for space cooling. Among the various Faults Detection and Diagnosis techniques developed over the last two decades, thermoeconomic diagnosis has been playing only a marginal role due to the difficulties encountered when applying the conventional thermoeconomic approaches to vapor compression refrigeration plants. In this paper a critical analysis on capabilities and limits of thermoeconomic diagnosis of refrigeration systems is proposed. The reference plant assumed for this study is a 116 kWc air-con…
A Multimodal Guide for Virtual 3D Models of Cultural Heritage Artifacts
2008
The area of cultural heritage preservation and fruition has drawn an ever growing attention of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction research in the last decades. The common aim is to develop systems that can interact with the user in a variety of modes and in the most natural way. In this paper, a multimodal guide for virtual 3D environment navigation is presented. The proposed system integrates X3D environment with a multimodal interface. The application scenario is to provide a visitor assistance and guidance during the visit of one of the halls in the historical Palazzo Steri, the headquarters of the University of Palermo.
“You look at it, but will you choose it”: Is there a link between the foods consumers look at and what they ultimately choose in a virtual supermarke…
2022
Most of the studies that showed a link between gaze allocation and consumer's food choices were performed on food products belonging to a same category. However, consumers usually make food choices in more complex environments, between many different products, and different factors can influence their choices. Therefore, our study aimed to understand the link between gaze behavior and food choices in a complex and realistic situation of choice. Participants (n=99) performed a food choice task in a virtual supermarket. They had to choose three food products to create a dish in four scenarios evoking different motivations (focus on health, environment, food pleasure, and daily scenario as con…
