Rappresentare le connessioni mai nate: il progetto di Luigi Moretti per la Casa del Balilla di Messina
2020
Luigi Moretti (Rome 1906 - Capraia 1973) was one of the undisputed protagonists of the history of architecture in Italy during the twentieth century. This essay attempts to investigate one of his projects never built dating back to 1936, the Casa del Balilla in Messina, developing a method based essentially on critical redrawing, starting from the exhaustive graphic-design documentation of the time, found in the Central Archive of the state. An exegetical process which, in an attempt to delineate those spatial, architectural and urban connections that never materialized, reveals the attention shown by Moretti to the peculiarities of the place and to man as user, who is assumed as the center…
Drawing space in the places of myth: Luigi Moretti and Sicily
2021
Tool support for MOLA
2006
AbstractThe paper describes the MOLA Tool, which supports the model transformation language MOLA. MOLA Tool consists of two parts: MOLA definition environment and MOLA execution environment. MOLA definition environment is based on the GMF (Generic Modeling Framework) and contains graphical editors for metamodels and MOLA diagrams, as well as the MOLA compiler. The main component of MOLA execution environment is a MOLA virtual machine, which performs model transformations, using an SQL database as a repository. The execution environment may be used as a plug-in for Eclipse based modeling tools (e.g., IBM Rational RSA). The current status of the tool is truly academic.
MIME: A Mixed-Space Collaborative System with Three Immersion Levels and Multiple Users
2018
Shared spaces for remote collaboration are nowadays possible by considering a variety of users, devices, immersion systems, interaction capabilities, navigation paradigms, etc. There is a substantial amount of research done in this line, proposing different solutions. However, still a more general solution that considers the heterogeneity of the involved actors/items is lacking. In this paper, we present MIME, a mixed-space tri-collaborative system. Differently from other mixed-space systems, MIME considers three different types of users (in different locations) according to the level of immersion in the system, who can interact simultaneously – what we call a tri-collaboration. For the thr…

A VR-based serious game for studying emotional regulation in adolescents
2015
[EN] We all use more or less adapted strategies to confront adverse emotional situations in our lives without being psychologically affected. Emotional Regulation (ER) strategies that we use determine the way in which we feel, express and behave. Moreover, ER strategies are particularly important in adolescents, a population in the age when the deficits of ER strategies can be linked to the appearance of numerous mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety, or disruptive behaviors. Thus, the early detection of dysfunctional ER strategies and the training in adaptive ER strategies will help us to prevent the future occurrence of possible behavioral and psychosocial disorders. In th…
Practice-Related Improvements in Postural Control During Rapid Arm Movement in Older Adults: A Preliminary Study
2012
International audience; Background. Postural control associated with self-paced movement is critical for balance in older adults. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a virtual reality based program on the postural control associated with rapid arm movement in this population. Methods. From an upright standing position, participants performed rapid arm raising movements toward a target. Practice-related changes were assessed by pre- and posttest comparisons of hand kinematics and center of pressure displacement parameters measured in a training group (mean age: 71.50 +/- 2.67 years, n = 8) and a control group (mean age: 72.87 +/- 3.09 years, n = 8). Training group participa…
Information Theoretic Entropy for Molecular Classification: Oxadiazolamines as Potential Therapeutic Agents
2013
In this review we present algorithms for classification and taxonomy based on information entropy, followed by structure-activity relationship (SAR) models for the inhibition of human prostate carcinoma cell line DU-145 by 26 derivatives of N-aryl-N-(3-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)amines (NNAs). The NNAs are classified using two characteristic chemical properties based on different regions of the molecules. A table of periodic properties of inhibitors of DU-145 human prostate carcinoma cell line is obtained based on structural features from the amine moiety and from the oxadiazole ring. Inhibitors in the same group and period of the periodic table are predicted to have highly similar propertie…
Virtual temporal bone: an interactive 3-dimensional learning aid for cranial base surgery.
2009
OBJECTIVE: We have developed an interactive virtual model of the temporal bone for the training and teaching of cranial base surgery. METHODS: The virtual model was based on the tomographic data of the Visible Human Project. The male Visible Human's computed tomographic data were volumetrically reconstructed as virtual bone tissue, and the individual photographic slices provided the basis for segmentation of the middle and inner ear structures, cranial nerves, vessels, and brainstem. These structures were created by using outlining and tube editing tools, allowing structural modeling either directly on the basis of the photographic data or according to information from textbooks and cadaver…
Can't simply roll it out: Evaluating a real-world virtual reality intervention to reduce driving under the influence.
2020
Driving under the influence (DUI) increases the risk of crashes. Emerging technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), represent potentially powerful and attractive tools for the prevention of risky behaviours, such as DUI. Therefore, they are embraced in prevention efforts with VR interventions primed to grow in popularity in near future. However, little is known about the actual effectiveness of such DUI-targeting VR interventions. To help fill the knowledge gap, this study explored the effects of one VR intervention as delivered in the real world. Using pre and post test design, including an intervention group (n = 98) and a control group (n = 39), the intervention evaluation examined you…
