Two-point functions with an invariant Planck scale and thermal effects

2008

Nonlinear deformations of relativistic symmetries at the Planck scale are usually addressed in terms of modified dispersion relations. We explore here an alternative route by directly deforming the two-point functions of an underlying field theory. The proposed deformations depend on a length parameter (Planck length) and preserve the basic symmetries of the corresponding theory. We also study the physical consequences implied by these modifications at the Planck scale by analyzing the response function of an accelerated detector in Minkowski space, an inertial one in de Sitter space, and also in a black hole spacetime.

Virtual compton scattering under π0 threshold at Q2=0.33 GeV2. Preliminary results

1999

We have measured the absolute unpolarized cross sections for photon electro-production off the proton ep → epγ with the Three-Spectrometer-Setup at MAMI at a momentum transfer q=600 MeV/c and a virtual photon polarization ɛ=0.62. The momentum q ′ of the outgoing real photon range from 33 to 111 MeV/c. We extracted two combinations of the recently introduced generalized polarizabilities [1,2].

Virtual Compton Scattering off Spin-Zero Particles at Low Energies

1996

We discuss the low-energy behavior of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude off a spin-zero target. We first compare various methods of obtaining a low-energy expression based either on the soft-photon approximation or the use of Ward-Takahashi identities. We point out that structure-dependent terms are defined with respect to a low-energy approximation of the pole terms which commonly is separated from the full amplitude. We derive a general expression for the structure-dependent terms in an expansion in terms of the momenta $k_1$ and $k_2$ of the initial and final virtual photon, respectively, up to and including terms of order ${\cal O}(k^4)$. At order ${\cal O}(k^2)$ two terms appear…

Polarizability contributions to the neutron-lepton amplitude at threshold

1973

Abstract Motivated by recent interest in the neutron-electron scattering amplitude at threshold, a detailed investigation of the two-photon exchange contribution, commonly known as the polarizability correction, to this amplitude is made, for general lepton mass. The contributions is related to the amplitude describing forward virtual Compton scattering on neutrons. To calculate it, we write dispersion relations for the Compton amplitudes and make use of the present knowledge of the neutron structure functions as well as the scaling hypothesis. The correction is much larger for muons than for electrons. Further, we discuss the region of validity of the extreme relativistic and the classical…

Black hole state degeneracy in Loop Quantum Gravity

2008

The combinatorial problem of counting the black hole quantum states within the Isolated Horizon framework in Loop Quantum Gravity is analyzed. A qualitative understanding of the origin of the band structure shown by the degeneracy spectrum, which is responsible for the black hole entropy quantization, is reached. Even when motivated by simple considerations, this picture allows to obtain analytical expressions for the most relevant quantities associated to this effect.

Generalized polarizabilities and electroexcitation of the nucleon

1999

Generalized nucleon polarizabilities for virtual photons can be defined in terms of electroproduction cross sections as function of the 4-momentum transfer $Q^2$. In particular, the sum of the generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities $\Sigma=\alpha+\beta$ and the spin polarizability $\gamma$ can be expressed by virtual photon absorption cross sections integrated over the excitation energy. These quantities have been calculated within the framework of the recently developed unitary isobar model for pion photo- and electroproduction on the proton, which describes the available experimental data up to an excitation energy of about 1 GeV. Our results have been compared to the predicti…

Many-body approach to the inclusive (e,e ') reaction from the quasielastic to the Delta excitation region

1997

We have performed a many body calculation of the inclusive (e,e') cross section which runs over the three traditional regions at intermediate energies: the quasielastic peak, the dip region and the delta region. The longitudinal and transverse response functions in the quasielastic peak have also been evaluated. Traditional effects like polarization, meson exchange currents, final state interaction and delta renormalization in the nuclear medium have been included. Meson exchange currents are generated from a model of pion electroproduction on the nucleon which reproduces accurately the experimental data. The inclusive cross section accounts for 1N,2N,3N mechanisms of virtual photon absorpt…
