Virtual Compton Scattering—Generalized Polarizabilities of Nucleons and Pions

Virtual Compton scattering off nucleons and pions at low energies is discussed. Predictions for the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon are presented within the framework of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory and the linear sigma model. First results for the generalized polarizabilities of the charged pion in chiral perturbation theory at O(p 4) are shown.

Lattice calculation of the pion transition form factor π0→γ*γ*

The pion transition form factor for the neutral pion double virtual photon decay is computed in two flavor lattice QCD, extrapolated to the continuum physical point. Implications for the computation of the contribution of hadronic light-by-light scattering to the muon anomalous magnetic moment are discussed.

New sum rule for the nuclear magnetic polarizability

I extend the well-known photonuclear sum rule that relates the strength of the photoexcitation of the giant dipole resonance in a nucleus to the number of elementary scatterers-nucleons to the case of virtual photons. The new sum rule relates the size of the magnetic polarizability of a nucleus to the slope of the transverse virtual photoabsorption cross section integrated over the energy in the nuclear range. I check this sum rule for the deuteron where necessary data is available, discuss possible applications and connection with other sum rules postulated in the literature.

We report on reactions producing two pions induced by real and virtual photons or nucleons. The role of different resonances in these reactions is emphasized. Novel results on coherent 2π photoproduction in nuclei are also reported.

Neutral Pion Threshold Production atQ2=0.05GeV2/c2and Chiral Perturbation Theory

New data are presented on the $p({e,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}p){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.05{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}{/c}^{2}$. The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Double deeply virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon.

We study the double deeply virtual Compton scattering (DDVCS) process off the nucleon, through the scattering of a spacelike virtual photon with large virtuality resulting in the production of a timelike virtual photon, decaying into an e^+ e^- pair. This process is expressed in the Bjorken regime in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and it is shown that by varying the invariant mass of the lepton pair, one can directly extract the GPDs from the observables. We give predictions for the DDVCS cross section and beam helicity asymmetry and discuss its experimental feasibility.

Low-momentum direct-photon measurement in Cu + Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV

We measured direct photons for pT<5GeV/c in minimum bias and 0%–40% most-central events at midrapidity for Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV. The e+e− contribution from quasireal direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the e+e− mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled p+p fit is observed for pT<4GeV/c in Cu+Cu data. The pT spectra are consistent with the Au+Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the p+p baseline are 285±53(stat)±57(syst)MeV/c and 333±72(stat)±45(syst)MeV/c for minimum bias and 0%–40% most-central even…

Cloud of virtual photons in the ground state of the hydrogen atom.

A spinless, nonrelativistic hydrogen atom coupled to an electromagnetic field is considered. The interaction is taken in the minimal-coupling form, and the ground state of the coupled system is obtained by straightforward perturbation theory. The form of the cloud of virtual photons surrounding the atom is studied through the quantum-mechanical average on this state of an appropriately defined coarse-grained energy-density (CGED) operator W(r\ensuremath{\rightarrow}). The properties of W(r\ensuremath{\rightarrow}) are studied in order to show that this operator can give a reliable description of the shape of the virtual photon cloud. The role of the Planck scale in black hole radiance

Lorentz invariance plays a pivotal role in the derivation of the Hawking effect, which crucially requires an integration in arbitrarily small distances or, equivalently, in unbounded energies. New physics at the Planck scale could, therefore, potentially modify the emission spectrum. We argue, however, that the kinematic invariance can be deformed in such a way that the thermal spectrum remains insensitive to trans-Planckian physics.
