NoC Reconfiguration for CMP Virtualization

2011

At NoC level, the traffic interferences can be drastically reduced by using virtualization mechanisms. An effective strategy to virtualize a NoC consists in dividing the network in different partitions, each one serving different applications and traffic flows. In this paper, we propose a NoC reconfiguration mechanism to support NoC virtualization under real scenarios. Dynamic reassignment of network resources to different partitions is allowed in order to NoC dynamically adapts to application needs. Evaluation results show a good behavior of CMP virtualization.

Exploring NoC Virtualization Alternatives in CMPs

2012

Chip Multiprocessor systems (CMPs) contain more and more cores in every new generation. However, applications for these systems do not scale at the same pace. Thus, in order to obtain a good utilization several applications will need to coexist in the system and in those cases virtualization of the CMP system will become mandatory. In this paper we analyze two virtualization strategies at NoC-level aiming to isolate the traffic generated by each application to reduce or even eliminate interferences among messages belonging to different applications. The first model handles most interferences among messages with a virtual-channels (VCs) implementation minimizing both execution time and netwo…

Virtual Environment for Implementation and Testing Private Wide Area Network Solutions

2013

In this paper the concept of virtual environment for implementation and testing private Wide Area Network (WAN) solutions is presented. The VMware vSphere virtualization platform is used. The paper presents the ability to reflect the structure of any given WAN topology using Vyatta software routers and VMware virtualization platform and verifies its reliability regarding data transfer. The paper includes a number of performance tests to verify the dependability of the proposed solution and provide a proof-of-concept for the network topology during the Design phase of the PPDIOO methodology, right before the Implementation phase.

Conclusions from the Evaluation of Virtual Machine Based High Resolution Display Wall System

2016

There are several approaches to the construction of large scale high resolution display walls depending on the required use case. Some require support of 3D acceleration APIs like OpenGL, some require stereoscopic projection. Others simply require a surface with a very high display resolution. The authors of this paper have developed a virtual machine based high resolution display wall architecture that works for all planar projection use cases and does not require a custom integration. The software that generates the presented content is executed in a virtual machine thus no specific APIs other than those of the virtualized OS are required. Any software that is able to run under a given OS…

H-KPP : Hypervisor-Assisted Kernel Patch Protection

2022

We present H-KPP, hypervisor-based protection for kernel code and data structures. H-KPP prevents the execution of unauthorized code in kernel mode. In addition, H-KPP protects certain object fields from malicious modifications. H-KPP can protect modern kernels equipped with BPF facilities and loadable kernel modules. H-KPP does not require modifying or recompiling the kernel. Unlike many other systems, H-KPP is based on a thin hypervisor and includes a novel SLAT switching mechanism, which allows H-KPP to achieve very low (≈6%) performance overhead compared to baseline Linux.

HyperIO: A Hypervisor-Based Framework for Secure IO

2023

Malware often attempts to steal input and output through human interface devices to obtain confidential information. We propose to use a thin hypervisor, called “HyperIO”, to realize a secure path between input and output devices using a partial implementation of device drivers. We apply our approach using two security systems built on HyperIO: FireSafe and ClipCrypt. FireSafe is a web browser extension which allows a remote web server to display and receive sensitive user information securely. ClipCrypt enables the user to securely enter and view their confidential information in commodity Windows applications.

Special Section on ITS Services to Smart City Context [Guest Editorial]

2018

The seven articles in this special section focus on new trends and developments in the intelligent transportation markets. Since the earliest of times, transportation has changed and revolutionized society and industry. Many of technology advances were focused on transportation and their means (road, rail, air, water, etc.) even, today there exist several areas of the knowledge that are focused on it. As time goes by, new terms have been established where technology is present as well, for instance, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Smart Cities, Smart Territory, Blockchain, Internet of Things, virtualization, Cloud computing, Intelligent Vehicles, embedded computing, Deep learning,…

Deploying Virtual MAC Protocols Over a Shared Access Infrastructure Using MAClets

2013

Network virtualization has been extensively researched in the last years as a key enabler for improving the network performance. However, virtualization in wireless networks pose some unique challenges: first, the usual over-provisioning approach for providing isolation between multiple virtual entities is not viable; second, the partitioning criteria are often ambiguous, since the actual resources perceived by each entity depend on many external (and time-varying) factors. In this demo, we show an effective virtualization solution for wireless local area networks, solving the problem of isolation and flexible resource paritioning, based on the concept of MAClets. MAClets are software progr…

Concept of virtual machine based high resolution display wall

2014

This paper presents the scalability and hardware dependency problems found in existing solutions in the high resolution display wall domain and proposes a new solution. Authors propose hosting the system that provides the visual content for the display wall inside a virtual machine. In such way any needed configuration of displays and resolutions can be applied to the graphics processing unit simulated by the virtualization system. The frame buffer content of the virtual graphics processing unit is then split, encoded with H.264 and sent over gigabit Ethernet as an RTP stream to the display wall. The display wall is driven by Raspberry Pi embedded devices that receive the stream, decode it …
