The activation of aggresomal pathway in Coxsackievirus B3 infection

2016

Clinical and Epidemiologic Features of Viral Gastroenteritis in Hospitalized Children: An 11-Year Surveillance in Palermo (Sicily)

2022

In order to acquire information regarding viral agents and epidemiologic features of severe paediatric Viral Acute Gastroenteritis (VAGE) across multiple seasons in the pre-rotavirus-vaccine era, the epidemiologic characteristics of VAGE were investigated among paediatric patients hospitalized in a major Sicilian paediatric hospital from 2003 to 2013. Overall, 4725 children were observed and 2355 (49.8%) were diagnosed with a viral infection: 1448 (30.6%) were found positive to rotavirus, 645 (13.7%) to norovirus, 216 (4.6%) to adenovirus, and 46 (0.97%) to astrovirus. Viral infections showed different patterns of hospitalization in terms of age at risk (younger for rotavirus and adenovirus…

Study of the interactions between Broad bean wilt virus 1 and its host plants

Broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV-1) is the type member of the Fabavirus genus, in the Secoviridae family. BBWV-1 is worldwide distributed and infects important horticultural and ornamental crops causing considerable economic losses. However, information about the biological and molecular characteristics of BBWV-1 isolates is scarce. BBWV-1 is composed of two molecules of positive single-stranded RNA (ssRNA+) that are separately encapsidated in virions of icosahedral morphology. Each ssRNA+ encodes polyproteins which are processed by proteolytic cleavage into functional peptides. RNA1 (~ 5.8 kb) encodes for one polyprotein that renders proteins involved in viral replication: a protease cofactor…

New developments in the management of hepatitis C virus infection: focus on boceprevir

2012

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is an important public health problem, and the standard treatment (combination of pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin) has an effectiveness rate of only 40%-50%. Novel virus-specific drugs have recently been designed, and multiple compounds are under development. The approval for the clinical use of direct-acting antivirals in 2011 (boceprevir [BOC] and telaprevir, viral NS3 protease inhibitors) has increased recovery rates by up to 70%. Therefore, a highly effective treatment has been envisioned for the first time. This paper focuses on BOC and the implementation of new BOC-based treatment regimes.

6-O sulfated and N-sulfated Syndecan-1 promotes baculovirus binding and entry into mammalian cells.

2013

Baculoviruses are insect-specific viruses commonly found in nature. They are not able to replicate in mammalian cells but can transduce them when equipped with an appropriate mammalian cell active expression cassette. Although the viruses have been studied in several types of mammalian cells from different origins, the receptor that baculovirus uses to enter or interact with mammalian cells has not yet been identified. Due to the wide tropism of the virus, the receptor has been suggested to be a generally found cell surface molecule. In this article, we investigated the interaction of baculovirus and mammalian cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) in more detail. Our data show t…

Intracellular interplay between canine parvovirus with nuclear pore complex and effect of infection on RNA synthesis

2015

Koiran parvovirus (CPV) on halkaisijaltaan 26 nm vaipaton virus.

Pathogenic mechanisms of how human parvovirus breaks self-tolerance

2017

It is known that viral infections can cause acute, chronic, and autoimmune diseases (ADs). However, the mechanism of how a persistent viral infection contributes to ADs remains still unclear. In this thesis, pathological and immunological aspects of how common viruses can initiate autoimmunity were investigated, and human parvovirus B19 (B19V) was employed as a model virus. B19V non-structural protein 1 (NS1), a superfamily 3 (SF3) helicase, initiated DNA damage resulting in cellular apoptosis. The apoptotic bodies (ApoBods) induced by B19V NS1 were purified and characterized. These ApoBods contained viral NS1 proteins with modified autoimmune-associated self-antigens, e.g. DNA, Smith, Apol…

The effect of PLC-inhibitor on echovirus 1 internalization probed with fluorescently labeled echovirus 1

2014

Soft X-ray Tomography Reveals HSV-1-Induced Remodeling of Human B Cells.

2022

Upon infection, viruses hijack the cell machinery and remodel host cell structures to utilize them for viral proliferation. Since viruses are about a thousand times smaller than their host cells, imaging virus-host interactions at high spatial resolution is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Scouting gross cellular changes with fluorescent microscopy is only possible for well-established viruses, where fluorescent tagging is developed. Soft X-ray tomography (SXT) offers 3D imaging of entire cells without the need for chemical fixation or labeling. Here, we use full-rotation SXT to visualize entire human B cells infected by the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). We have mapped the temporo…

Cell biology of canine parvovirus entry

2003

Parvovirukset aihe…
