Synthesis and solution properties of star-shaped poly(tert-butyl acrylate)

A series of star polymers consisting of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) arms and an ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) microgel core were synthesized using anionic polymerization. The effect of various parameters (precursor length, ratio [[EGDMA]/[Initiator], reaction time, and overall concentrations) on the average number of arms was investigated. Molecular weights were determined using GPC coupled with an online viscometer and MALLS. The exponents for the relation between intrinsic viscosity or radius of gyration and molecular weight, respectively, are extremely low, indicating that the dimensions of the star polymers only slightly increase with the number of arms. Demixing of unsheared and sheared solutions of polystyrene in tert-butylacetate and the pressure influence on their flow behaviour

For the system tert-butyl acetate/polystyrene (M= 670000) the phase separation behaviour (upper critical solution temperatures, upper critical solution pressures) is investigated by means of visual and turbidimetric cloud-point measurements and by viscometry. Do viscosity and wettability of fluoride varnishes affect their fluoride release?

BACKGROUND: There are several brands of fluoride varnishes in the market, but the dynamics of fluoride release from each one might be different. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the release of fluorides by fluoride varnishes and to determine the correlation with viscosity and wettability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty four enamel blocks 5x5 mm were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=11) ((Duraphat®, Clinpro™ White Varnish, Flúor Protector® and control). Morphology, Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Isotropic and Anisotropic PP/rPET/GnP Nanocomposite Samples

The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) on the morphology, rheological, and mechanical properties of isotropic and anisotropic polypropylene (PP)/recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)-based nanocomposite are reported. All the samples were prepared by melt mixing. PP/rPET and PP/rPET/GnP isotropic sheets were prepared by compression molding, whereas the anisotropic fibers were spun using a drawing module of a capillary viscometer. The results obtained showed that the viscosity of the blend is reduced by the presence of GnP due to the lubricating effect of the graphene platelets. However, the Cox–Merz rule is not respected. Pressure dependence of the demixing of polymer solutions determined by viscometry

From the break-down in the viscosity of a polymer solution, associated with the entrance into the two phase region, the pressure dependence of the demixing temperatures of solutions of polystyrene (M = 600.000) in cyclohexane, cyclopentane, diethylmalonate and 1-phenyldecane was measured up to 1000 bar. The application of pressure increases the solubility of polystyrene in cyclopentane and diethylmalonate, but decreases that in 1-phenyldecane; in the case of cyclohexane, a pressure of optimum miscibility is observed at ca. 120 bar.

[EN] This paper reports the effects of multiple mechanical recycling on the structure and properties of amorphous polylactide (PLA). The influence of the thermo-mechanical degradation induced by means of five successive injection cycles was initially addressed in terms of macroscopic mechanical properties and surface modification. A deeper inspection on the structure and morphology of PLA was associated to the thermal properties and viscoelastic behaviour. Although FT-IR analysis did not show significant changes in functional groups, a remarkable reduction in molar mass was found by viscometry. Influence of chain length on the molecular dynamics of an aliphatic ionene

An aliphatic random copolymer ionene (a cationic polyelectrolyte with N + in the repeat unit), was fractionated with the continuous polymer fractionation and investigated for its molecular weight dependent properties. The fractions were analyzed with GPC and capillary viscometry for their molecular weight. Glass transition temperatures were determined with DSC and a strong molecular weight dependence was observed, but no influence in the ionic conductivity was observed. The temperature dependency of ionic conductivity in ionenes is described.

On the factors governing the pressure dependence of the viscosity of moderately concentrated polymer solutions

Viscosity measurements were carried out as a function of pressure and temperature with solutions of polystyrene in eight (endothermal) θ-solvents at the respective critical composition by means of a Searle-type apparatus. A rolling-ball viscometer was used for the investigation of the pure solvents. In all cases the viscosity coefficient increases in a more or less exponential manner when the pressure is raised. For θ-conditions, the volumes of activation of the solutions exceed that of the pure solvent by typically 10–15%.
