Dehydration potential of ultrathin clouds at the tropical tropopause

2003

[1] We report on the first simultaneous in situ and remote measurements of subvisible cirrus in the uppermost tropical troposphere. The observed cirrus, called UTTCs ( ultrathin tropical tropopause clouds), are the geometrically (200-300 m) and optically (t approximate to 10(-4)) thinnest large-scale clouds ever sampled (approximate to10(5) km(2)). UTTCs consist of only a few ice particles per liter with mean radius approximate to5 mum, containing only 1-5 % of the total water. Yet, brief adiabatic cooling events only 1-2 K below mean ambient temperature destabilize UTTCs, leading to large sedimenting particles (r approximate to 25 mm). Due to their extreme altitude above 17 km and low part…

Light transmission of the human lens and its relation with aging

2011

Purpose To determine the visible light transmission of the human crystalline lens of persons of different ages, using both solar and incandescent illumination. Methods The spectral transmission of lens was measured by using the Perkin-Elmer 800 UV/VIS spectrophotometer. With these data we calculated the percentage of visible light transmission for solar illumination, simulated by the CIE D65 illuminant, and for incandescent illumination (A illuminant). Results The total amount of visible light transmitted by nine crystalline lenses is represented as a function of age: with solar illumination and with incandescent illumination and the comparison between both illuminants. In general, the amoun…

The interaction of deoxyribonucleic acid with methyltin(IV) moieties in solution studied by small-angle X-ray scattering, circular dichroism and UV s…

2000

The nature of calf thymus DNA in aqueous solution, in the presence of the organotin(IV) species Sn IV Me 3 , Sn IV Me 2 and Sn IV Me, possibly partly hydrolysed and/or hydrated, was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) at different temperatures and circular dichroism (CD). The results are compared with those of previous 119 Sn Mossbauer studies on condensed DNA phases. The effects of tin-phosphate oxygen bonding on the DNA melting profile in DNA-Sn IV Me systems are in agreement with previous reports on DNA-Main Group metal ion interactions. The structure and conformation of the DNA double helix are not influenced by Sn IV Me n species, even in …

Near-UV to red-emitting charged bis-cyclometallated iridium(iii) complexes for light-emitting electrochemical cells

2011

Herein we report a series of charged iridium complexes emitting from near-UV to red using carbene-based N^C: ancillary ligands. Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of this series are described in detail together with X-ray crystal structures. Density Functional Theory calculations show that the emission originates from the cyclometallated main ligand, in contrast to commonly designed charged complexes using bidentate N^N ancillary ligands, where the emission originates from the ancillary N^N ligand. The radiative process of this series of compounds is characterized by relatively low photoluminescence quantum yields in solution that is ascribed to non-radiative deactivati…

Teaching and learning gross anatomy using modern electronic media based on the visible human project

2002

This article reviews online (Internet) anatomy projects and multimedia productions (books and CD-ROMs) based on the Visible Human Project (VHP) of the United States National Library of Medicine. The focus of these projects and productions is on the teaching of 3D anatomy using the digitized sections of the visible human male and female. The article also provides information about the VHP, its goals and what it has achieved thus far.

A hidden species becoming visible : biogeography and ecology of Rhynchotalona latens (Cladocera, Anomopoda, Chydoridae)

2019

A long hidden chydorid (Chydoridae, Cladocera) taxon, first found as fossil specimens and recently redefined as Rhynchotalona latens (Sarmaja-Korjonen et al., Hydrobiologia 436: 165-169, 2000) is investigated for its biogeography and ecology. Late Holocene sediment sequence from Lake Sylvilampi, NE Finnish Lapland, and R. latens spatial distribution in relation to limno-climatic attributes in Finland were examined. Principal component analyses of fossil cladoceran communities showed that R. latens is mostly affiliated with Alonella excisa-Alonopsis elongata-Alonella nana species pool. Generalized linear modeling of R. latens responses to limno-climatic variation indicated that it prefers ac…

Novel Lipophilic Lanthanide Bis-Phthalocyanines Functionalized by Pentadecylphenoxy Groups: Synthesis, Characterization and UV-Photostability

2012

Novel sandwich-type phthalocyanines containing a rare earth metal core (Pr, Nd, Eu-Lu) and macrocycles peripherally substituted by pentadecylphenoxy groups were synthesized using a cardanol-based phthalonitrile precursor and the respective lanthanide acetate. Additionally, the metal free-base analog compound was studied for comparison. The purified reaction products were all found to be thick and viscous substances at room temperature, showing liquid crystalline behavior with a distinct increase in fluidity at ca. 40 ° C. The complexes are readily soluble in chloroalkyl solvents and dissolve fairly well in DMF with some tendency to form aggregates. Besides they are strongly hydrophobic and …

White light emitting silsesquioxane based materials: the importance of a ligand with rigid and directional arms

2022

The synthesis of a novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane functionalized with eight rigid and directional terpyridine-based arms (Ter-POSS) was successfully achieved via a Sonogashira reaction. The POSS based ligand was extensively characterized using different techniques including 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The assembly of these nano-caged units in the presence of different transition metal ions (Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) as well as of a cation from the lanthanides (Eu3+) was investigated using absorption and emission spectroscopies. The final materials display an evident emission in different regions of the visible spectrum as a function of the …

The influence of storage method on the transparency of pig crystalline lens

2019

Este artículo se ha publicado de forma definitiva en: http://www.scielo.br/pdf/abo/v82n1/0004-2749-abo-82-01-0056.pdf Purpose: The porcine eye is frequently used as a research model. This paper analyzes the effect of different storage methods on the transparency of pig crystalline lens. Methods: A spectral transmission curve (from 220 to 780 nm) for the crystalline lens was determined experimentally after storage in different conditions: saline solution, formalin, castor oil, and freezing at -80°C. The total transmission in the visible spectrum, which was used as an index of transparency, was calculated from these curves. For comparative purposes, fresh lenses were evaluated and used as con…
