UV–Vis, IR, Raman and theoretical characterization of a novel quinoid oligothiophene molecular material
2003
A quinoid-type oligothiophene, 3 0 ,4 0 -dibutyl-5,5 00 -bis(dicyanomethylene)-5,5 00 -dihidro-2,2 0 :5 0 ,2 00 -terthiophene, which can be viewed as an analog of TCNQ, has been investigated by spectroelectrochemistry and density functional theory calculations, in its neutral and dianionic states. Electrochemical data show that the molecule can be both reduced and oxidized at relatively low potentials. Upon reduction, both experiments and theory agree well with the generation of a dianionic charged species. The model shows that the electronic structure of the dianion is consistent with two anionic dicyanomethylene groups attached to a central terthienyl spine having an aromatic structure. T…

Axion cold dark matter: Status after Planck and BICEP2
2014
We investigate the axion dark matter scenario (ADM), in which axions account for all of the dark matter in the Universe, in light of the most recent cosmological data. In particular, we use the Planck temperature data, complemented by WMAP E-polarization measurements, as well as the recent BICEP2 observations of B-modes. Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data, including those from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, are also considered in the numerical analyses. We find that, in the minimal ADM scenario, the full dataset implies that the axion mass m_a = 82.2 pm 1.1 {\mu}eV (corresponding to the Peccei-Quinn symmetry being broken at a scale f_a = (7.54 pm 0.10)*10^10 GeV), or m_a = 76.6 …

Recognition and alignment of variables from UV–vis chromatograms and application to industrial enzyme digests classification
2017
Abstract In the last years, industrial applications of chemometrics have largely increased due to their capacity to extract important information from complex records as chromatograms or spectra data. The use of chemometric methods also can avoid the use of detectors of elevated cost. In this work, a procedure to recognize the relevant chemical information contained in complex UV–vis chromatograms, after a trypsin digestion, to identify the three enzyme main classes (proteases, amylases and cellulases) commonly employed in the cleaning industry, has been developed. In order to recognize the chromatogram peaks, six indices of peak identity or identifiers were defined. A program written in MA…
COMPARATIVE-STUDY ON INCLUSION-COMPOUNDS OF 4-BIPHENYLACETIC ACID WITH BETA-CYCLODEXTRIN, HYDROXYPROPYLATED-BETA-CYCLODEXTRINS, AND METHYLATED-BETA-C…
1994
AbstractThe inclusion behavior of Hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin (HP-β-Cyd) and of methylated-β-Cyclodextrins, heptakis-(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-Cyclodextrin (DM-β-Cyd) and heptakis-(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-Cyclodextrin (TM-β-Cyd), in solution and solid state was compared with that of natural β-Cyclodextrin (β-Cyd) using an anti-inflammatory drug, 4-biphenylacetic acid (BPAA), as a guest molecule. The solubility of BPAA with β-Cyd and β-Cyd derivatives in aqueous solution were determined. Stability constants were calculated by phase solubility method at various pH values and temperatures. The formation of inclusion complexes with β-Cyd and β-Cyd derivatives in the solid slate were confirmed by infra…
Preparation of N-doped TiO2: characterization and photocatalytic performance under UV and visibile light
2009
Nanocrystalline N-doped TiO(2) samples were prepared by using TiCl(4) or TiOSO(4) as precursors. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was tested using the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and visible light. Some samples were more active than commercial Degussa P25. A shift of the absorption edge to a lower energy and a stronger absorption in the visible light region were observed in the samples obtained from TiCl(4). Two absorption edges were observed in the samples derived from T…

Enhancement of visible light photoelectrocatalytic activity of ZnO(core)/TiO2(shell) composite by N-doping and decorating with Au0 nanoparticles
2017
Abstract The composites consisting of ITO-supported ZnO nanorods covered with TiO2 shell were doped with nitrogen and decorated with gold nanoparticles in order to improve their photocatalytic activity under visible light. N-doped TiO2 (TiO2(N)) was prepared under mild conditions through a simple sol-gel synthesis in the presence of NH4Cl. Such procedure results in formation of a highly porous shell of TiO2(N) on the ZnO nanorods. The gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of the size 7–25 nm were grafted onto the surface of TiO2 as well as TiO2(N) by a photodeposition method from aqueous solution of [AuCl(4-x)(OH)x]− precursor at pH 6.7. The composition and microstructure of the prepared samples were …
Photoconductivity of Germanium Nanowire Arrays Incorporated in Anodic Aluminum Oxide
2007
Photoconductivity of germanium nanowire arrays of 50 and 100 nm diameter incorporated into Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) membranes illuminated with visible light is investigated. Photocurrent response to excitation radiation with time constants faster than 10−4 s were governed by absorption of incident light by nanowires, while photokinetics with time constants of the order of 10−3 s originates from the photoluminescence of the AAO matrix. Possible applications of nanowire arrays inside AAO as photoresistors are discussed.
