Acute effects of transient vertical whole-body vibration

1991

The question as to whether shock-type whole-body vibration causes increasingly acute strain was investigated. Random vibrations were superimposed with shocks differing in amplitude and in number per unit of time in a systematic manner. The weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration was kept constant in all over the varied experiments. A total of 17 men were exposed to vibration from an electrohydraulic simulator. The following strain criteria were used: biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the head, electrical activity of the muscles of the back and the neck, subjective sensation, skin temperature in the lumbar area and visual and tracking performance. It was found that increasing shock a…

Prevalence and risk factors of retinal vein occlusion: the Gutenberg Health Study.

2015

SummaryObjective To determine the age- and sex-specific prevalence and determinants of retinal vein occlusions (RVOs) in a large population-based German cohort. Methods The investigation included 15 010 participants (aged 35–74 years) from the Gutenberg Health Study. We determined the prevalence of RVO (central retinal vein occlusion [CRVO] and branch retinal vein occlusion [BRVO]) for the local population by assessing fundus photographs of 12 954 (86.3%; 49.8% women and 50.2% men) participants. Further, we analyzed the associations of RVO with cardiovascular, anthropometric, and ophthalmic parameters. Results The weighted prevalences of RVO, CRVO, and BRVO were 0.40%, 0.08%, and 0.32%, res…

Photodynamic therapy with verteporfin for juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularization in pathologic myopia: a long-term follow-up study.

2007

Purpose To assess the effect of verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) in juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to pathologic myopia (PM). Design Prospective, open-label, consecutive, interventional case series. Methods We prospectively followed a series of 48 consecutive patients (49 eyes) with pathologic myopia (≥ 6 diopters) who received verteporfin PDT for juxtafoveal CNV. This population was divided into two groups based on age (group A ≤ 55 years old, group B >55 years old), in three subgroups based on CNV lesion size, and in three categories based on refractive error at baseline. Results The median follow-up was 32 months (range, 12 to 56 months). Visual acuity (VA…

Post-LASIK Visual Quality With a Corneoscleral Contact Lens to Treat Irregular Corneas.

2015

To evaluate the visual quality results of fitting a corneoscleral contact lens with multiaspheric geometry design (MAGD CScL) in subjects with irregular corneas after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery. From a database of patients evaluated for scleral contact lenses, we identified those with irregular corneas and visual problems after they underwent LASIK surgery for correcting myopia. They manifested unsatisfactory visual quality with their current contact lenses or glasses. Therefore, a MAGD CScL was fitted and monitored according to standardized fitting methodology. A diagnostic trial set was used in the fitting process. Visual acuity (VA), subjective visual quality (S…

Vision evaluation in people with Down's syndrome.

1994

We tested the colour vision of 72 people with Down's syndrome using the Ishihara test and an anomaloscope. We found that 13 of the subjects, 6 males and 7 females, had defective colour vision according to Pickford's classification. In monocular vision 10 eyes were protan (five simple, three extreme and two deviant), one eye was simple deuteranomalous and the remaining eyes were normal: in binocular vision four of the subjects were protan (two simple and two deviant), two subjects were deutan (one simple and one deviant) and the rest were normal. Many of our subjects had lens opacities, strabismus, nystagmus, hypermetropia, high myopia and astigmatism, confirming literature reports. The cont…

Cilioretinal artery occlusion.

2015

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristic findings and functional outcome of this rare type of retinal vascular occlusion in a large patient series. Patients and Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients with a cilioretinal artery obstruction (CAO) seen at the University Eye Clinic Mainz (Germany) over a ten-year period between 1/1999 and 12/2008 was undertaken. The mean follow-up amounted to 42 months. Results: Thirty-three eyes were diagnosed with CAO. Three distinct groups were differentiated: (i) isolated CAO in 20/33 eyes; visual outcome achieving 20/50 in 17/20 eyes; (ii) CAO combined with central retinal vein occlusion in 9/33 eyes; visual outcome a…

Effect of 3rd-order aberrations on human vision

2007

To investigate the effect of 3rd-order aberrations on human vision.Grupo de Ciencias de la Visión, University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain. The 3rd-order aberrations coma and trefoil were induced with purpose-designed soft contact lenses, 3 inducing coma (low [0.05 microm], medium [0.13 microm], high [1.03 microm]) and 3 inducing trefoil (low [0.07 microm], medium [0.17 microm], high [0.96 microm]). Monocular high-contrast (HCVA) and low-contrast (LCVA) visual acuities and contrast sensitivity were measured in 11 subjects wearing contact lenses with a 5.0 mm artificial pupil. The reduction in HCVA and LCVA was statistically significant only for the highest coma and trefoil values (P.0001). For co…

Visual Acuity in Simple Myopic Astigmatism: Influence of Cylinder Axis

2006

Purpose. The relationship between astigmatic refractive errors and their associated visual acuity has been studied in recent years in the context of refractive power space. The influence of the axis of astigmatism remains a matter of controversy. Our goal in this study is to provide additional experimental evidence to clarify this subject. The influence of the simulated axis orientation was compared with other factors that affect visual acuity such as the particular design of the test and the differences between eyes. Methods. Simple myopic astigmatism from 0 to 3.00 D, in steps of 0.25 D, and with five different axes between 0° and 90°, were simulated on four healthy eyes of young observer…

Impact of the line of sight on toric phakic intraocular lenses for hyperopia

2003

We present a hyperopic patient with a decentered line of sight in whom the residual refractive error after toric phakic intraocular lens (TP IOL) implantation was improved by displacement and individualized treatment. A 35-year-old woman presented with asthenopic complaints 2 months after bilateral TP IOL implantation and IOL rotation 4 weeks later. Examination revealed the line of sight to be nasally and inferiorly decentered in relation to the center of the pupil. A more nasal reenclavation of the TP IOL decreased the coma, and the uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20. We conclude that line of sight should be measured before TP IOL implantation, especially in hyperopic eyes.
