Comunicazione, mediazione, immunizzazione: Arrival di Villeneuve
2021
Dennis Villeneuve’s Arrival (2016) has a key topic the encounter with the other and the mediations mandatory for this very encounter could be the occasion for a radical transformation of the subject, instead of a moment of immunitary closeness. By analysing the complex theoretical and formal structure put in place by the movie, this paper resorts to three keywords in the recent history of critical visual theory – that is, medium, communication, munus (e.g., gift in latin) – to show the exemplary nature of cinematic narrative in the understanding of contemporary biopolitical processes.
L’ordine del discorso autoriale. Immagini, pratiche, estetiche tra politica e biografia
2022
The paper aims to investigate the possibilities for the concept of “political author” as an effect of discourse to survive in contemporary cinema by analysing the case of Italian biopics of the new Millennium. After a proposal of definition of a political authoriality, the analyses of the films attempt to show how the articula- tion of such an authoriality in three different figures – the director, the actor, and the real model – and in subcategories defines a specific feature of biographical cinema, to eventually conclude with some remarks about the posthumous life of the authorial discourse after the “death of the author”, between politics and commitment.
Quinte barocche nel deserto. Baarìa di Giuseppe Tornatore
2014

A look from outside: foreign photographers in Palermo between the 19th and 20th centuries
At the beginning of the 19th century, the representation of Italy was mostly due to the literary and artistic narrative of foreign travellers. The resulting image influenced the vision Italians had of their own country and carried weight with the awareness of their national identity. Sicily stood outside the traditional itinerary of the Grand Tour for a long time and only became an essential stop after the publication of Goethe and Vivant Denon’s travel journals in the 1780s. This literature led to the codification of a series of stereotypes linked to neoclassical culture and to the first development of Romanticism. With the introduction of photography in mid-19th century, the role of natur…
A Lexicon for Italian cinema: A conversation about history, theory and critique
2017
This article represents the outcome of a round table organized and conducted by Giacomo Tagliani about the Lessico del cinema Italiano/Lexicon of Italian Cinema (2014–2016). This research and editorial project comprises three volumes and 21 entries that address the history of Italian cinema through an original and challenging approach, namely to detect a list of conceptual clusters able to provide new perspectives over the heritage of Italian films. In this refined version, the authors who took part in that round table, that is, Roberto De Gaetano (also editor of the volumes), Massimiliano Coviello, Luca Venzi and Francesco Zucconi, outline their involvement in the research project, their s…
Depicting life, analysing the power: The ‘actuality’ of Italian cinema
2014
The increasing production of biographical films dealing with power and its figures raises interesting questions about the nature and the aims of political cinema. What are the strategies used to represent people whose public image has completely overlapped to their identity? This matter concerns not only thematic aspects of the biopic genre, but more in depth it discloses fundamental issues at the basis of any theory of cinema. From this point of view, some Italian instances propose original solutions, creating a coherent framework in continuity with a long tradition that has marked the history of Italian thought. This article aims at making a survey of these inputs through the analysis of …
