Assessment of modifications in thickness, curvatures, and volume upon the cornea caused by disposable soft contact lens wear.

2015

Purpose To assess the effect of different disposable soft contact lenses on several corneal parameters–-thickness, anterior and posterior curvature, and volume–-by means of a Scheimpflug imaging-based device (Pentacam HR). Diurnal variations of these parameters were taken into account. Methods Twenty-one young, healthy subjects wore 4 different types of daily disposable soft contact lenses on 4 different days: Dailies AquaComfort Plus, SofLens, Dailies Total1, and Acuvue TruEye. The lenses had different material and water content. Pachymetry and curvature maps and corneal volume values were obtained using the Pentacam HR twice a day: one before putting the lens on and one after an 8-hour pe…

CORRELATION OF OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY PATTERN AND VISUAL RECOVERY AFTER VITRECTOMY WITH SILICONE OIL FOR RETINAL DETACHMENT

2006

PURPOSE: To assess prospectively the features of the macular surface in silicone oil-filled eyes after surgery by analyzing whether silicone oil affects optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements and their reproducibility and whether a statistical correlation exists between postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and foveal thickness measured by OCT. METHODS: Twenty eyes of 20 patients underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade for retinal detachment. After vitrectomy, complete ophthalmic examination including determination of BCVA and OCT was performed to quantify the visual recovery and the foveal thickness. RESULTS: Ophthalmoscopy revealed that the retina appeared to…

Association of Birth Weight With Foveolar Thickness in Adulthood: Results From a Population-Based Study

2021

Purpose Low birth weight (BW) is associated with alterations of foveal shape development in childhood—leading to an increased retinal thickness of the fovea. The aim of the present study was to assess whether BW has a long-term effect on foveal retinal thickness (RT) and is still present in adulthood. Methods In the German population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), participants were examined with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The association between self-reported BW and RT in the foveolar and perifoveal locations was assessed. Multivariable linear regression analyses with adjustment for potential confounders and grading of foveal hypoplasia were performed. Results Overal…

Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses to correct high myopia: A comparative study between Staar and Adatomed models

2001

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of using posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs) to treat high myopia, comparing two different models, Staar and Adatomed. METHODS: Twenty-four eyes from 12 patients were studied prospectively. A phakic Staar IOL was implanted in one eye of each patient, and the other eye received a phakic Adatomed IOL. Patients with uveitis or ocular trauma prior to ocular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, or capsular pseudoexfoliation were excluded. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -16.00 ± 5.05 D for the Staar group and -15.39 ± 2.83 D for the Adatomed group. Average follow-up was 32.4 months (range, 19 to 46 mo) for the Ada…

Randomized trial of intravenous immunoglobulins versus prednisolone in Graves' ophthalmopathy.

1996

Abstract Glucocorticoids are usually given for management of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO), but they may cause side effects. By comparison, intravenous administration of immunoglobulins resulted in clinical improvement and decreased antibody titres in a large number of autoimmune diseases. Therefore, a randomized trial was done, in which 19 patients with active GO were treated with a 20-week course of oral prednisolone (P, starting dose 100 mg/day), and 21 received 1 g immunoglobulin/kg body weight for 2 consecutive days every 3 weeks. The immunoglobulin course was repeated six times. Before and at the end (20 weeks) of immunomodulating therapy, ophthalmological investigation and quantitative…

Combined procedure for glaucoma and cataract: A retrospective study

1994

Abstract To ascertain the long-term effects of a triple procedure in the case of coexisting cataract and glaucoma, we did a retrospective study of 93 eyes that had cataract extraction, IOL implantation, and trabeculectomy within a ten-year period. Mean follow-up was 32.4 ± 21.9 months. Mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower than preoperatively, even though fewer medications were being used. One year after surgery, 60% of eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better with an average improvement of 3.8 Snellen lines. Patients who had had surgery four or more years before the study had the highest percentage of eyes with an IOP exceeding 22 mm Hg. Th…
