Visual mismatch negativity for changes in orientation - a sensory memory-dependent response

2008

It remains unclear whether the mismatch negativity of event-related potentials (ERPs) in vision resembles its auditory counterpart in terms of memory relatedness. We recorded ERPs to visual bars in adult humans engaged in an auditory task. In one condition, a bar ('standard') repeated at 400- or 1100-ms non-stimulated intervals was rarely (P = 0.1) replaced by another bar of a different orientation ('deviant'). In the other condition (400-ms intervals), the occurrences of the standards were replaced by 10 (P = 0.1 each) bars of different orientations, including that of the deviant ('control-deviant'). Deviants shifted ERPs towards negative polarity relative to standards in occipital electro…

Do categorical representations modulate early perceptual or later cognitive visual processing? An ERP study.

2021

Abstract Encoding of perceptual categorical information has been observed in later cognitive processing like memory encoding and maintenance, starting around 300 ms after stimulus onset (P300). However, it remains open whether categorical information is also encoded in early perceptual processing steps (reflected in the mismatch negativity component; vMMN). The main goal of this study was to assess the influence of categorical information on both early perceptual (i.e., vMMN component) and later cognitive (i.e., P300 component) processing within one paradigm. Hence, we combined an oddball paradigm with a delayed memory task. We used five-dot patterns belonging to different categories even t…

Best-corrected visual acuity and retinal thickness are associated with improved cortical visual processing in treated wet AMD patients

2015

Purpose In response to anti-VEGF treatment for wet AMD retinal anatomy and visual acuity is often remedied. In our previous study, we showed that visual evoked potentials (VEP) improve following successful anti-VEGF treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate, how visual acuity and retinal thickness changes are reflected in VEP parameters. Moreover, we wanted to assess the feasibility of VEP as a novel monitoring tool for wet AMD patients. Methods A total of 16 patients and six control subjects were enrolled in this study. Patients received three bevacizumab intravitreal injections. At the beginning of the study and four to 6 weeks after the last injection, the best-corrected visual…

Effect of specialized applications on the visual functions of amblyopic eye in Latvian children

2021

The classical treatment option of amblyopia is occlusions of non-amblyopic eye. The newest methods involve specialized computer and phone games, applications that involve both eyes in visual processing during treatment as well as stimulate binocularity. The aim of the work was to assess the efficiency of specialized phone application ‘Duovision’ in the treatment of amblyopia in preschool-age children. There were 30 participants (5-8 years old): 16 participants had occlusion therapy; 14 participants played the specialized phone application Duovision®. The visual acuity of amblyopic eye, as well as stereopsis was evaluated at near and far distances before the treatment, 2 and 4 months after t…
