Influence of cultivar and concentration of selected phenolic constituents on the in vitro chemiopreventive potential of olive oil extracts.

One of the main olive oil phenolic compounds, hydroxytyrosol (3,4-DHPEA), exerts in vitro chemopreventive activities (antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic) on tumor cells through the accumulation of H2O2 in the culture medium. However, the phenol composition of virgin olive oil is complex, and 3,4-DHPEA is present at low concentrations when compared to other secoiridoids. Calculation of the pH and the titratable acidity in clinically used infusion solutions.

Clinically used infusion solutions are complex aqueous mixtures composed of a variety of different salts, acids, and non-electrolytes, and are characterized by composition, initial pH, and titratable acidity (TA). By rigorous treatment as a multi-composed acid-base system, pH and TA were calculated from proton dissociation equilibria, mass balance equations and electroneutrality condition. Nine were arbitrarily chosen as model solutions in which pH and TA were experimentally determined. Epigrafía árabe del Emirato (siglo IX). Lápida de Tudela y estela de una omeya

Repaso de la epigrafía del emirato y del protocolo de sus epitafios, con edición, traducción y estudio de dos piezas labradas con escritura árabe de estilo cúfico «arcaico». Una lápida se halló, fuera de contexto, en excavaciones practicadas junto a la catedral de Tudela; la otra es el epitafio de una dama Omeya descubierto antes de 1960, sin duda en la ciudad de Córdoba. Early Bronze Age painted wares from Tell el-'Abd, Syria: A compositional and technological study

Abstract The ‘Euphrates Monochrome Painted Ware’ (henceforth EMPW) is a ceramic style attested in the Middle Euphrates region in northern Syria at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, ca. 2900–2700 BCE. This style is not an isolated phenomenon; rather, it must be understood in the context of a general, albeit short-lived, re-introduction of painted ceramics into local assemblages of Greater Mesopotamia. This article intends to scrutinize in what ways Julian’s stay in Gaul as a Caesar were decisive in Julian’s political and military education, and whether a specific ruling style and manner may be detected in the Parisian years of Julian’s government. Relying on a critical analysis of the documentation (Julian himself, Mamertinus, Ammianus, Libanios), the author examines the military and civilian aspects of Julian’s training as an apparently inexperienced ruler but quick learner. This article proposes a reflection about Italian art exhibitions on Middle Ages all over the twentieth century in order to understand the reception of medieval history in Italy. The Italian case is compared with the other European countries and their own relationships with Middle Ages. The articles studies also the important changes in the cultural offer and in the museum function during the last decade of the twentieth century and analyses their major consequences on the exhibitions. Lastly the ‘status’ of the exhibited objects and their mise-en-scene are examined.

The ‘grave of the Court Pit’, A rediscovered Bronze Age tomb from Carchemish

This paper examines the British Museum unpublished records related to an Early Bronze (EB) Age pithos burial uncovered a century ago in the Inner Town at Carchemish. The grave, cursorily cited and variously dated (Chalcolithic, EB or even LBA) in the final reports, was described in some detail by Hogarth and Thompson; a precise dating is, however, possible today thanks to the information of paramount importance given by T. E. Lawrence who identified and took a picture of the associated finds, which was recently rediscovered in the Carchemish Archives.
