The Creation of Ethnicity: National Costume as Reconstruction or Construct?

2015

Since its development at the end of 19th century, Latvian national costume has become a symbol of national identity. The task of this article is to trace how the publications of ethnographers during the 20th century shaped the view of Latvian national costume. The appearance of national costume was influenced by the growing knowledge of the national cultural heritage. Although national costume resembling ethnographic examples was recognized as highly authentic, in reality it was a reconstruction created by museum staff and other ethnographic researchers. The public demand for practical publications which could be of use in making national costume hindered more profound research into the his…

Fear and Body. Art and Media Projects for Teacher Training.

2018

Media and contemporary art is important for teacher training. Art educators could link art experience with their own reality, and media evidences. Creativity deals with social, political and cultural issues. From an innovative perspective, we propose strategies for art educators. We introduce topics in the school setting, linked to the emotions, needs and students' life. Concepts such as 'fear' or 'body' allow us to investigate current problems. We approach the concepts from the work of Spanish artists Carmen Calvo and Anna Ruiz Sospedra. Methodology used mixed, combining Arts-Based Educational Research and Artography. We highlight the great acceptance by students of this process

The Geometry of a Domed Architecture: A Stately Example of Kārbandi at Bagh-e Dolat Abad in Yazd

2016

This paper analyses the kārbandi of the Hashti pavilion at Bagh-e-Dolat Abad in Yazd. Kārbandi is a spatial system obtained through the projection of a star-shaped drawing onto a curved surface. It is characterised by a complex use of geometry and repetitive symmetry. The analysis of its geometrical aspects contributes to an understanding of the traditional rules underlying the original design. The kārbandi of the octagonal vestibule of the Hashti pavilion consists of a complex roof system that completes the octagonal volume of the room below; its intrados presents a pattern of interlocking ribbed arches. The paper also looks at the drawings, module and proportions of the Hashti pavilion, w…

Effect of the dam’s feeding regimen on the meat quality of light suckling lambs

2010

In order to verify the effect of the introduction of concentrates without GMO risk and at low aflatoxin risk in the diet of grazing milk ewes on the quanti-qualitative production of meat of their milk-fed light lambs, two trials were carried out - in Sicily, on 32 Comisana lambs, slaughtered at 49±4 days (trial 1); and in Sardinia, on 28 Sarda lambs, slaughtered at 31±4 days(trial 2) - comparing the following grazing dams’ feeding regimes: High stocking rate + Organic (barley – tickbean or pea) Concentrate (HO); High stocking rate + Conventional (maize-soybean) Concentrate (HC); Low stocking rate + Organic Concentrate (LO); Low stocking rate + Conventional Concentr…

Seasonal-variation of nitrogenous compounds in the xylem sap of citrus

1983

Samples of tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel were taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined. The nitrogenous fraction of the sap was composed mainly of free amino acids (92–97% of total nitrogen) and nitrates throughout the year. Proline was the most abundant amino acid during almost the entire cycle, and its concentration was especially high during the autumn and winter period. Nevertheless, a significant part (40–60%) of the total organic nitrogen was transported as arginine. Total nitrogen as well as amino acids and nitrates were maximal at spring flush. At spring flush and summer flush there was also …

Interactions between non-volatile water-soluble molecules and aroma compounds in Camembert cheese

2002

Abstract Interactions between selected aroma compounds and non-volatile water-soluble molecules were studied using dynamic headspace-gas chromatography. A model water-soluble extract (MWSE), previously constructed in gustatory and physico-chemical accordance with the crude Camembert cheese WSE, allowed the contribution of non-volatiles to the headspace composition of volatile compounds to be assessed. The presence of the MWSE increased the headspace concentration of 2-heptanone, 1-octen-3-ol and 3-methylbutanol, showing that these three volatile compounds were released by MWSE. Omission tests performed on MWSE allowed for the impact of each MWSE component on aroma compounds release to be de…

The determination of the DNA base composition in 19 species of adriatic sponges with high-pressure liquid cation-exchange chromatography.

1976

Abstract The (adenine + thymine)/(guanine + cytosine) base ratios of 19 species of adriatic sponges have been determined by high-pressure liquid cation-exchange chromatography. The base ratios vary from 1.49 (Mycale massa) to 0.63 (Hippospongia communis) according to an (A+T) content of 59.7 and 38.6 mol%, respectively. The DNAs of sponges of the order Keratosa showed marked differences in their (A +T) contents (39.5 to 58.8 mol%) whereas those of Tetractinellida and Halichondrina were nearly identical (39.3 to 40.8 and 49.5 to 49.8 mol%, respectively). The 5-methylcytosine (5MC) content was determined in 8 sponge DNAs by a semiquantitative method. The values differed from 0.8 to 2.2 mol% o…

Pyrolysis of humic acids from digested and composted sewage sludge

2000

Humic acids (HAs) were extracted from four digested sewage sludge samples composted for four months, one, two and four years. HAs were pyrolyzed at three different temperatures applying both conventional and in situ methylation (ISM) pyrolysis. The pyrolysates were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Derivatization (ISM) and pyrolysis temperature had dramatic effects on the composition and relative amounts of the pyrolysates. Among the derivatized HA fragments aliphatic compounds prevailed under all the pyrolysis conditions tested. Aromatic substances consisting mainly of guaiacyl-type compounds were detected in higher abundances only at elevated temperatures. Witho…
