Stability of the lipid fraction of milk‐based infant formulas during storage

A study is made of the effects of storage (time and temperature) on the lipid fraction of four milk-based adapted infant formulas with basically the same composition, though differing in the iron salt added (lactate or sulfate) and/or the vitamin E source (a-tocopherol or α-tocopherol acetate). Peroxide value, hydroperoxide C 18 percentage and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) content were used as indicators of lipid peroxidation. Optimal diet composition for European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus): carbohydrate stress and immune parameter responses

Abstract A feeding trial was conducted on the European whitefish to study the effects of replacing fish meal with fish oil and corn starch on the stress response and immune system parameters. Nine diets with varying levels of fish meal (FM; 38–86%), fish oil (FO; 2–22%) and corn starch (CS; 0–33%), and fixed levels of wheat meal (10%) and vitamin–mineral premix (2%) were formulated and replicates were allocated among 25 tanks following the D-optimality criteria. Fish were fed the extruded diets to satiation for 10 weeks in a flow-through freshwater system at 15 °C. Metallic nanoparticle enrichment at low temperature, shallow CO2 seeps in Southern Italy

We report on metal enrichment along a natural pH gradient owing to increased CO2 degassing at cold, shallow seeps of Vulcano Island in the Mediterranean Sea, off Sicily. We assessed composition of unfiltered and filtered seawater (<100 nm) along acidic zones ranging between ambient and pH 5, and showed that most seep derived elements are present as nanoclusters which then aggregate into larger colloids while mixing with ambient seawater along a pH gradient. Chemical composition of the essential oil of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) growing wild in Southern Italy

Abstract The essential oil from aerial parts of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation. The oil content was 0.15% (v/w), on a dry weight basis. The oil composition was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Altogether 66 compounds were identified accounting for 93.2% of the oil. Sesquiterpenes represent the 23.9% of the oil. In the oil were also present fatty acids (21.8%) and waxes (19.3%). The oil shows no antibacterial activity.

Young people continually lose contact to their natural surroundings and agriculture. As school is one of young people’s main source of knowledge it should bring students and nature back together, by using agricultural examples. This research examines German students’ and adults’ knowledge on plant biological basics and viticulture choosing grapevine as an agricultural example of plants. It was undertaken as a paper-and-pencil test with participants of different ages and from different educational backgrounds. Influence of bentonite fining on protein composition in wine

Abstract Bentonite is the only fining agent which can stabilize wine and prevent protein haze formation after bottling. Currently many approaches are used to find an alternative because of bentonite's negative influence on color and aroma compounds. Nevertheless, the interaction of bentonite with wine proteins is not fully understood. Therefore, we analyzed the influence of a NaCa-combined bentonite on the protein content and composition of different wines showing a partial selectivity on protein adsorption. Abstract The capacity of different materials (yeast walls, colloids and cellulose) to bind octanoic acid and decanoic acid was investigated in a model wine. The interactions between these toxic fatty acids and the soluble or insoluble material was shown using the equilibrium dialysis method. Yeast walls adsorb decanoic acid and to a lesser extent octanoic acid which confirms previous results. In comparison, colloids from both grape or yeast weakly bind decanoic acid and do not significantly bind octanoic acid. No interactions between cellulose and fatty acid were observed.
