Geometrical deviation of end-of-life parts as a consequence of reshaping by single point incremental forming

2021

AbstractPutting in place circular economy strategies is an urgent challenge to face. In this scenario, manufacturing processes play a relevant role as efficient material reuse enabler. Scientists have to make an effort either to find new process or to rethink old process to reprocess end-of-life (EoL) component to recover both material and functions. In this paper, single point incremental forming (SPIF) process is used for reshaping sheet metal EoL components. The entire process chain was replicated including both deep drawing process (to imitate the end-of-life component) as well as SPIF operations (to obtain the reshaped components). The geometrical deviation as a consequence of SPIF ope…

Haptic and Visual Feedback Assistance for Dual-Arm Robot Teleoperation in Surface Conditioning Tasks

2020

Contact driven tasks, such as surface conditioning operations (wiping, polishing, sanding, etc.), are difficult to program in advance to be performed autonomously by a robotic system, specially when the objects involved are moving. In many applications, human-robot physical interaction can be used for the teaching, specially in learning from demonstrations frameworks, but this solution is not always available. Robot teleoperation is very useful when user and robot cannot share the same workspace due to hazardous environments, inaccessible locations, or because of ergonomic issues. In this sense, this article introduces a novel dual-arm teleoperation architecture with haptic and visual feedb…

Summarizing Large Scale 3D Mesh

2018

International audience; Recent progress in 3D sensor devices and in semantic mapping allows to build very rich HD 3D maps very useful for autonomous navigation and localization. However , these maps are particularly huge and require important memory capabilities as well computational resources. In this paper, we propose a new method for summarizing a 3D map (Mesh) as a set of compact spheres in order to facilitate its use by systems with limited resources (smartphones, robots, UAVs, ...). This vision-based summarizing process is applied in a fully automatic way using jointly photometric, geometric and semantic information of the studied environment. The main contribution of this research is…

Re-forming end-of-life components through single point incremental forming

2020

Abstract Applying Circular Economy strategies is mandatory to face material demand while minimizing the environmental impact. Manufacturing processes are to be thought as means to enable material/component reuse strategies. This paper presents the suitability of Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) to re-form End-of-life sheet metal components. Deep drawing followed by SPIF process on aluminium alloys were carried out to simulate reforming processes chain. The resulting thinning and strain distributions were experimentally analysed for different configurations. The research proves that the local action and enhanced formability nature of SPIF allow non-homogeneously thinned and reduced fo…

Selective visual odometry for accurate AUV localization

2015

In this paper we present a stereo visual odometry system developed for autonomous underwater vehicle localization tasks. The main idea is to make use of only highly reliable data in the estimation process, employing a robust keypoint tracking approach and an effective keyframe selection strategy, so that camera movements are estimated with high accuracy even for long paths. Furthermore, in order to limit the drift error, camera pose estimation is referred to the last keyframe, selected by analyzing the feature temporal flow. The proposed system was tested on the KITTI evaluation framework and on the New Tsukuba stereo dataset to assess its effectiveness on long tracks and different illumina…

2D/3D Object Recognition and Categorization Approaches for Robotic Grasping

2017

International audience; Object categorization and manipulation are critical tasks for a robot to operate in the household environment. In this paper, we propose new methods for visual recognition and categorization. We describe 2D object database and 3D point clouds with 2D/3D local descriptors which we quantify with the k-means clustering algorithm for obtaining the Bag of Words (BOW). Moreover, we develop a new global descriptor called VFH-Color that combines the original version of Viewpoint Feature Histogram (VFH) descriptor with the color quantization histogram, thus adding the appearance information that improves the recognition rate. The acquired 2D and 3D features are used for train…

Quality Assessment of Reconstruction and Relighting from RTI Images: Application to Manufactured Surfaces

2019

In this paper, we propose to evaluate the quality of the reconstruction and relighting from images acquired by a Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) device. Three relighting models, namely the PTM, HSH and DMD, are evaluated using PSNR and SSIM. A visual assessment of how the reconstructed surfaces are perceived is also carried out through a sensory experiment. This study allows to estimate the relevance of these models to reproduce the appearance of the manufactured surfaces. It also shows that DMD reproduces the most accurate reconstruction/relighting to an acquired measurement and that a higher sampling density don't mean necessarily a higher perceptual quality.

Simulation Goals and Metrics Identification

2016

Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) is a very useful means for producing high quality models during simulation studies. When ABMS is part of a methodological ap- proach it becomes important to have a method for identifying the objectives of the simulation study in a disciplined fashion. In this work we propose a set of guidelines for properly capturing and representing the goals of the simulations and the metrics, allowing and evaluating the achievement of a simulation objective. We take inspiration from the goal-question-metric approach and with the aid of a specific problem formalization we are able to derive the right questions for relating simulation goals and metrics.

Parametric Hull Design with Rational Bézier Curves

2021

AbstractIn this paper, a tool able to support the sailing yacht designer during the early stage of the design process has been developed. Quadratic and cubic Rational Bézier curves have been selected to describe the main curves defining the hull of a sailing yacht. The adopted approach is based upon the definition of a set of parameters, say the length of water line, the beam of the waterline, canoe body draft and some dimensionless coefficients according to the traditional way of the yacht designer. Some geometrical constraints imposed on the curves (e.g. continuity, endpoint angles) have been conceived aimed to avoid unreasonable shapes. These curves can be imported in any commercial CAD …

An adaptive multi-rate system for visual tracking in augmented reality applications

2016

The visual tracking of an object is a well-known problem, and it involves many fields of applications. Often a single sensor, the camera, could not provide enough information in order to track the whole object trajectory due to a low updating rate; therefore a multi-sensor system, based also on inertial measurements, could be necessary to improve the tracking accuracy. This leads to the fundamental question: how can information from different sensors be combined when they work at different rates? In this paper an approach based on recursive parameter estimation focusing on multi-rate situations is suggested. The problem is here formulated as the state-of-the-art problem of the visual tracki…
