Abstract In the paper, a numerical and experimental study was carried out to highlight the effect of the distance d between the weld seam and the reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welded AA6082-T6 structures. An L-shaped profile was welded to a sheet metal with varying tool rotation and distance d from the weld seam. The Cut Compliance method was used to determine the resulting longitudinal residual stress. A dedicated FE model for FSW was set up, validated and utilized to predict the longitudinal residual stress in the assembled part. Influence of friction stir processing conditions on the manufacturing of Al-Mg-Zn-Cu alloy/boron carbide surface composite

Abstract Surface metal matrix composites were synthesized via friction stir processing (FSP) on the surface of aluminium alloy 7075 (AA 7075) sheets by incorporating B4C particles (B4CP). The influence of tool rotational speeds, powder particle sizes, and change in tool travel direction between FSP passes on particle distribution and resulting properties were studied in detail. Change in tool travel direction, decreased tool rotation speed and fine B4C particles enhanced B4CP distribution and wear properties thereof. Wear resistance of composites were doubled on account of the B4CP distribution and resultant several strengthening mechanisms.

Accurate keyframe selection and keypoint tracking for robust visual odometry

This paper presents a novel stereo visual odometry (VO) framework based on structure from motion, where a robust keypoint tracking and matching is combined with an effective keyframe selection strategy. In order to track and find correct feature correspondences a robust loop chain matching scheme on two consecutive stereo pairs is introduced. Keyframe selection is based on the proportion of features with high temporal disparity. This criterion relies on the observation that the error in the pose estimation propagates from the uncertainty of 3D points—higher for distant points, that have low 2D motion. Using infrared thermography in order to compare laser and hybrid (laser plus MIG) welding processes

International audience; In order to deepen the understanding of the differences between laser and laser-arc hybrid welding, comparisons were undertaken using thermography. The experiments were carried out for a T assembly of aluminium alloy plates. Modelling, based on the finite element method approach, was realized using IR temperature measurements and seam geometry. For a value of the power supply, depicted as a surface source in the hybrid case, agreement was found between simulated and measured temperatures. The arc power supply efficiency value is similar to the usually used value.

The application of the random balance method in laser machining of metals

International audience; Features peculiar to laser technology offer some advantages over more traditional processes, but, like all processes, it has its limitations. This article studies the limitations of laser machining of metals, and quantifies, through an experimental design method, the influence of operating parameters on productivity and on the quality of the machined surface. Three study materials were used: an aluminium alloy, stainless steel and a titanium alloy. Contactless generation of cavitation in high temperature liquid metals and its impact on particle dispersion in solidified iron and steel samples

Abstract A recently developed method for the contactless magnetic generation of cavitation is demonstrated for high-melting-point metals. The approach is based on the floating-zone technique, which is truly contactless and crucible-free as it uses electromagnetic forces. Using this method, ultra-high-temperature ceramic particles, such as TiN, TiB2 and TiC, are admixed in liquid iron and 316L steel. The dispersion and particle refinement caused by cavitation treatment during melting and solidification are investigated. Fast Earth Mover's Distance Computation for Catadioptric Image Sequences

International audience; Earth mover's distance is one of the most effective metric for comparing histograms in various image retrieval applications. The main drawback is its computational complexity which hinders its usage in various comparison tasks. We propose fast earth mover's distance computation by providing better initialization to the transportation simplex algorithm. The new approach enables faster EMD computation in Visual Memory (VM) compared to the state of the art methods. The new proposed strategy computes earth mover distance without compromising its accuracy.
