Reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire among pregnant women in a Mediterranean area

2013

Background: Studies exploring the role of diet during pregnancy are still scarce, in part due to the complexity of measuring diet and to the lack of valid instruments. The aim of this study was to examine the reproducibility and validity (against biochemical biomarkers) of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in pregnant women. Methods: Participants were 740 pregnant women from a population-based birth cohort study in Valencia (INMA Study). We compared nutrient and food intakes from FFQs estimated for two periods of pregnancy (reproducibility), and compared energy-adjusted intake of several carotenoids, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin C and a-tocopherol of the FFQ in the firs…

Understanding the effect of Vitamin D treatment on human uterine leiomyoma growth using in vitro and in vivo models

2019

Role of muscle-targeted nutritional therapy: new data.

2022

Purpose of review To provide an updated overview of recent efficacy data on the use of muscle-targeted nutritional therapy, which should consider the optimization of protein and essential amino acids intakes, possibly in combination with supplementation with vitamin D (correction of deficiency/insufficiency status) and v-3 fatty acids. Recent findings Intervention studies conducted in the last years in different healthcare settings and heterogeneous patient populations support the use of muscle-targeted oral nutritional supplementation to improve muscle mass, function and physical performance in patients with sarcopenia. Higher efficacy is likely to be achieved in combination with individua…

Case Report: Unmasking Hypercalcemia in Patients With Neuroendocrine Neoplasms. Experience From Six Italian Referral Centers

2021

BackgroundHypercalcemia is a common paraneoplastic syndrome which can occur in up to 10% of patients with advanced neoplasms. Paraneoplastic parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) represents the most frequent cause of this syndrome. In neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) paraneoplastic hypercalcemia is rare.Case SeriesThe present series includes all patients with NENs and paraneoplastic hypercalcemia from four Italian centres: (I) A 40-year-old man was hospitalized for repeated episodes of falls, hyposthenia and drowsiness. Severe hypercalcemia was found. Metastatic pancreatic G2 NEN and PTHrP-related hypercalcemia were diagnosed. The patient started therapy with somatostatin analogs (SSA)…

Dairy calcium intake and lifestyle risk factors for bone loss in hiv-infected and uninfected mediterranean subjects

2012

Abstract Background Despite the reported high prevalence of osteoporosis in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-population, there have been no previous studies examining dairy calcium intake and bone mineral density (BMD) in HIV-subjects. We assessed the prevalence of low BMD in HIV-infected and uninfected subjects and analyzed the effects of calcium intake, lifestyle and HIV-related risk factors on BMD. Methods One hundred and twelve HIV-infected subjects were consecutively enrolled. Seventy- six HIV-uninfected subjects matched for age and sex were enrolled as the control group. The HIV-subjects were interviewed about lifestyle habits and completed a weekly food-frequency questionnaire …

Intestinal dysbiosis and hormonal neuroendocrine secretion in the fibromyalgic patient

2018

Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic syndrome and its pathogenesis is controversial. The recent literature has placed considerable attention on the link between alteration of the intestinal microbiota and fibromyalgia, emphasizing the close connection between the neuroenteric system and the CNS. This study aims to evaluate the probable relationship between intestinal dysbiosis and altered secretion of hormones and vitamins such as cortisol, serotonin, Vitamin D and thyroid hormones in a patient with fibromyalgia.

Association of low 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations with elevated parathyroid hormone concentrations and low cortical bone density in early puberta…

2003

Background: Very few studies have evaluated both parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and their effects on bone mass in children. Objective: We studied the associations of serum 25(OH)D and intact PTH (iPTH) with bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) at different bone sites and the relation between serum 25(OH)D and iPTH in early pubertal and prepubertal Finnish girls. Design: The subjects were 10‐12-y-old girls (n = 193) at Tanner stage 1 or 2, who reported a mean (± SD) dietary calcium intake of 733 ± 288 mg/d. 25(OH)D, iPTH, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAP 5b), urinary calcium excretion, BMC, areal BMD, and volumetric BMD were asses…

Analysis of vitamin D levels in patients with and without statin-associated myalgia — A systematic review and meta-analysis of 7 studies with 2420 pa…

2014

article i nfo Introduction: VitaminD (vitD)deficiencymay beassociatedwith anincreased riskof statin-related symptomatic myalgia in statin-treated patients. The aim of this meta-analysis was to substantiate the role of serum vitamin D levels in statin-associated myalgia. Methods: The search included PUBMED, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EMBASE from January 1, 1987 to April 1, 2014 to identify studies that investigated the impact of vit D levels in statin-treated subjects with and without myalgia. Two independent reviewers extracted data on study characteristics, methods and outcomes. Quantita- tive data synthesis was performed using a fixed-effect model. Results: The electronic search yielde…

Abstract 18967: Analysis of Vitamin D Levels in Patients With and Without Statin-induced Myalgia - A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of 7 Studies…

2014

Introduction: Vitamin D (vit D) deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of statin-related muscle complaints, and symptomatic myalgia in statin-treated patients. Hypothesis: The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether subjects with statin-induced myalgia have lower serum vit D levels compared with those who are asymptomatic. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus and EMBASE (up to March 2014) to identify studies that investigated the impact of vit D levels in statin-treated subjects with and without myalgia. Two independent reviewers extracted data on study characteristics, methods and outcomes. Results: The electronic search yielded 4…
