Phytophagous insects face a wide range of microbial and eukaryotic parasites, each activating different immune pathways that could compromise the activity of the others. A scoring system for herpes simplex virus (HSV) induced vaginitis/vulvitis in Balb/c mice was delineated from vaginal infections. Four degrees of vaginitis/vulvitis could be distinguished after infection with suitable strains of HSV despite nearly identical replication rates. The time course of replication, inflammation and pathohistology was compared further. Grade 0 was defined by lack of symptoms despite presence of strong replication, which was detectable at days 3-6. Focal necrotic lesions of the epithelial layer were present containing HSV-specific antigens. DNA could be detected by hybridization only in the outer zone of these areas. Background Berry size is considered an important quality factor in red wine production. The objective of this work was to study the effect of vine water status on berry mass in field conditions, with a specific focus on berry tissue masses. Results The study was carried out over 2 years in a plot located in Sicily (Italy). Two irrigation treatments were established. Dynamic evolution of berry mass and berry tissue masses at harvest were recorded. Berries produced under water deficit conditions were smaller and characterized by a higher skin-to-flesh ratio. ABSTRACT The present work was developed to select lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to be used as starter cultures in functional cheese production. The indigenous milk LAB populations were isolated from fermented raw ewes’ milks (four bulks) added with 0.5 mg/mL of nine polyphenols commonly found in winery by-products.
