Vocational education approach: New TEL settings—new prospects for teachers' instructional activities?
2013
This study focuses on vocational education teachers’ instructional activities in a new technology-enhanced learning (TEL) setting. A content analysis is applied to investigate teachers’ and students’ interactions in a 3D game context. The findings illustrate that when teachers’ and students’ interactions are mediated by a game, teachers seem to apply different discussion activities to empower vocational learning than they do in traditional classroom settings. Additionally, the present study shows that teachers spontaneously develop new ways of supporting vocational learning processes. In more detail, two main types of instructional activities were identified: a “knowledge-providing” approac…
Learning at work : Researching personal development and competence building in work integration companies
2017
The context of our research is Work Integration Enterprises. These hire people who are emerging from processes of social exclusion for a period of between 6 months and three years. In these companies, people work while learning a trade and learning to work, in order to facilitate their entry into the ordinary labour market.Of the different academic approaches to processes of learning at work and training, we have chosen Michael Eraut's notion of learning trajectories to apply to our research. Implications of the Modular Curriculum in the Senior Secondary School in Finland
2004
Interest in the modular curriculum has increased during the last few years. The modular approach has been seen as a promising curriculum model when more flexible structures are sought for reorganizing education. It creates alternatives for organizing school work in a pedagogically functional way in which individual students are offered more opportunities to select their own program of study (Warwick, 1988). Co-operation with schools has increased and forced schools to find common principles to arrange the timetables and daily schoolwork. In this context, the modular curriculum provides an instrument to outline the purpose and goals of schoolwork in a new way, and put them into practice at t…
