The Playing Brain. The Impact of Video Games on Cognition and Behavior in Pediatric Age at the Time of Lockdown: A Systematic Review

2021

A growing number of children and adolescents play video games (VGs) for long amounts of time. The current outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic has significantly reduced outdoor activities and direct interpersonal relationships. Therefore, a higher use of VGs can become the response to stress and fear of illness. VGs and their practical, academic, vocational and educational implications have become an issue of increasing interest for scholars, parents, teachers, pediatricians and youth public policy makers. The current systematic review aims to identify, in recent literature, the most relevant problems of the complex issue of playing VGs in children and adolescents in order to provide sugges…

Collaborative business planning in initial vocational education and training

2015

There is a growing demand to enhance entrepreneurship. This study aims at producing knowledge that can assist teachers in designing and supporting collaborative learning of entrepreneurship in vocational education. A qualitative case study approach was adopted. The outcome of this study provides a better understanding of the factors that hinder and enable collaboration, as related to entrepreneurship education in initial vocational education and training. In practice, nine dimensions of descriptive factors that hindered the exercise and nine distinct descriptive factors that acted as enablers were identified. This study suggests that, although the script of the learning task creates the set…

Characteristics of Workplace Learning Among Finnish Vocational Students

2009

In Finnish VET, students’ work experience is explicitly defined as workplace learning, instead of the practice of already learnt skills. Therefore, vocational students’ learning periods in the workplace are goal-oriented, guided and assessed. This paper examines the characteristics of students’ workplace learning and compares them with the characteristics of employees’ workplace learning. The data were collected with an Internet questionnaire from final-year vocational students (N = 3106). In total, 1603 students (52 %) answered the questionnaire. The data were analysed using quantitative methods. The results indicate that features typical of employees’ workplace learning can also be found …

Health and Social Care Educators’ Competence in Digital Collaborative Learning : A Cross-Sectional Survey

2020

The ongoing change from traditional pedagogy to digital collaborative learning requires a new mode of teaching, learning, and educators’ responsibilities. For competence in digitally mediated teaching, educators need understanding of how to provide appropriate digital environment to learn collectively and individually. The aim of this study was to describe and explore health and social care educators’ perceptions of their current level of competence in digital collaborative learning and identify distinct educators’ profiles. Data were collected via cross-sectional survey from educators in 21 universities of applied science and eight vocational colleges in Finland using an instrument coveri…

Challenge of supporting vocational learning: Empowering collaboration in a scripted 3D game – How does teachers’ real-time orchestration make a diffe…

2012

Along with the development of new technologies, orchestrating computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has become a topic of discussion because new learning spaces challenge teacher to support collaborative learning in new ways. However, despite the optimistic notions of teachers’ orchestration in CSCL situations, there are still no systematic research findings on real-time orchestration. This study is one attempt to fill in the knowledge gap on understanding the differences in knowledge construction processes between settings with and without teachers’ real time orchestration in 3D learning games from a socio-cultural perspective. The aims of the study are twofold. The first aim is…

Improvement of Media Competence within Cooperative Learning Process in a Vocational Education Institution

2015

Basing on the theoretical formulations concerning the functions and competence of media, as well as cooperative learning the authors developed a model aimed at improvement of media competence of the vocational education institutions’ students. The elaborated model offers teachers in various vocational educational institutions to generate and develop ideas for media competence perfection, ensuring an opportunity in an interdisciplinary project to use the multiform functions of media competence (information, technologies, computer, network, critical and visual) and cooperative learning to ensure efficient learning process. The aim of the article is to analyze the results ob…

Classroom Orchestration: Balancing between Personal and Collaborative Learning Processes

2014

The nature of vocational education needs has changed. In authentic vocational classroom contexts, there is a rising need to develop new ways to integrate ongoing and overlapping processes of students' personal learning environments and collaborative knowledge construction. However, there is currently very little knowledge about how teachers integrate these two approaches in arranging learning. This creates new challenges for teachers when creating instructional activities, especially regarding teacher-student interactions. This case study illuminates teachers' instructional activities in empowering the students' knowledge construction in a technology-enhanced learning setting. The results s…

Collaborative 3D learning games for future learning: teachers’ instructional practices to enhance shared knowledge construction among students

2013

Collaborative games will enable new kinds of possibilities for learning. In the future, the goal of game-based learning should be to introduce new ideas and deepen in-depth understanding of learners. However, studies have shown that shared high-level knowledge construction is a challenging process. Moreover, thus far, few empirical studies have examined what constitutes the teacher’s role in games. The focus of this paper is to investigate teachers’ real-time instructional activities in a scripted 3D game setting. Our hypothesis is that groups with real-time teacher instruction will come up with more shared knowledge construction that can be considered productive than groups studying withou…

FORMER PUPILS’ EXPERIENCED MENTAL HEALTH (MH) AND QUALITY OF LIFE (QOL) SOME YEARS AFTER COMPLETION OF ADAPTED SECONDARY EDUCATION

2016

The article addresses the following research question: Some years after having completed adapted secondary education, (a) how do former pupils assess their present status of MH and QoL, and (b) what aspects of the adapted education do they consider to have contributed positively to this status? The purpose of the study is to look for positive outcomes of adapted secondary education in pupils’ adult life, regarding their MH and QoL in particular. The study may also contribute knowledge that may be relevant in reducing drop-out from secondary vocational schools. Data collection was done by interviewing nine former pupils, all from the same school. Their statements were analyzed by a combinati…

Evaluation in the Transnational ‘Management by Projects' Policies

2004

There is a supranational tendency in educational governance towards a 'management by projects' policy, which substitutes democratic procedures and norm-based control in FOR? materialisation of educational justice. The organisational level becomes crucial for the management of education and the pressure to conceive education as a managerial activity increases. At the same time, educational expertise in public administration becomes substituted by subcontracted, policy-led research. In the context of transnational governance the civil service is turning into a busnocracy, which is responsible for the quality of education to the global markets instead of to people. The article discusses this t…
