Attraction of egg-killing parasitoids toward induced plant volatiles in a multi-herbivore context

In response to insect herbivory, plants emit volatile organic compounds which may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. In nature, plants are often attacked by multiple herbivores, but the majority of studies which have investigated indirect plant defenses to date have focused on the recruitment of different parasitoid species in a single-herbivore context. A passive sampling-based analytical strategy for the determination of volatile organic compounds in the air of working areas.

Abstract An analytical methodology based on the use of a polyethylene layflat tube filled with activated carbon and Florisil (ACFL-VERAM) was employed for the passive sampling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air of working areas of packing industries. VOCs amount in the ACFL-VERAM sampler was directly determined through head-space-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-GC–MS) allowing a direct determination in only 20 min without the need of any previous treatment. Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) is a serious pest of palm trees. A comprehensive knowledge of the insect olfactory system is essential for the development of efficient semiochemical-based control methods. Breath testing as a method for detecting lung cancer

Early diagnosis of lung cancer is important due to high mortality in late stages of the disease. An ideal approach for population screening could be the breath analysis, due to its non-invasiveness, simplicity and cheapness. Optimum design and operation of primary sludge fermentation schemes for volatile fatty acids production.

This paper presents a model-knowledge based algorithm for optimising the primary sludge fermentation process design and operation. This is a recently used method to obtain the volatile fatty acids (VFA), needed to improve biological nutrient removal processes, directly from the raw wastewater. The proposed algorithm consists in a heuristic reasoning algorithm based on the expert knowledge of the process. Volatile constituents of Stachys palaestina L. (Palestine woundwort) growing in Lebanon

The hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Stachys palaestina L. collected in Lebanon in the Kadisha Valley, yielded 0.1% (w/w) of essential oil. GC and GC-MS analyses enabled the identification of 87 compounds representing 90.8% of the total oil. Hexadecanoic acid (10%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (6.9%), eugenol (4.3%) and (E)-caryophyllene (4.3%) were the main components. On the whole, the oil was constituted mainly of sesquiterpenes (37.7%), among which sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (20.7%) slightly prevailed over oxygenated sesquiterpenes (17.0%). This is the first report on the chemical composition of S. palaestina essential oil.
