NiO@Ni core shell for electrochemical detection of Hg ions

2018

Heavy metals are considered as one of the most dangerous chemicals for human health. Among heavy metals, mercury is one of the most dangerous one: few ppb of Hg can cause serious damages to brain, heart, lungs and kidney. The Environmental Protection Agency setted the maximum concentration of Hg in water as 2 ppb [1] . Nowadays is very important to develop new and novel sensors for heavy metals that could be cheap, easy to use and for in-situ and real-time analysis and in this context electrochemical sensors are perfect candidates [2] . The more powerful electrochemical tequinique is Square Wave Anodic Strippic Voltammetry (SWASV), a two step techinique were the heavy metals are first depos…

Ni/NiO thin film Sensors for Mercury ions detection by Square wave anodic stripping voltammetry

2018

Square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is considered a very interesting electrochemical method for heavy metals detection in comparison to conventional techniques [1]. The main features of this technique are the high sensitivity and reproducibility (standard deviation lower than 5%), besides, the limit of detection is in the ppb level so is comparable with standard techniques such as AAS or ICP, the instrumentation is very inexpensive and easy to use and the detection time is very low. Among heavy metals, mercury is one of the most toxic for both environment and humans. In fact, it may cause serious health problems to brain, kidney and DNA. The concentration limit imposed by US En…

Nanochemistry Aspects of Titania in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

2009

We analyze the main nanochemistry factors affecting photovoltaic performance in TiO2 employed as wide bandgap semiconductor in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). What is the best morphology of the oxide? Which processes yield the required structures? Finally, putting the discussion in the context of the rapid evolution of photovoltaic technologies, we argue that new titania nanostructures will form the basic component of second-generation solar modules based on dye solar cells.

Towards 1 kW power production in a reverse electrodialysis pilot plant with saline waters and concentrated brines

2017

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising technology to extract energy from salinity gradients, especially in the areas where concentrated brine and saline waters are available as feed streams. A first pilot-scale plant was recently built in Trapani (Italy), and tested with real brackish water and brine from saltworks. The present work focuses on the scale-up of the pilot plant, reaching more than 400 m 2 of total membrane area installed and representing the largest operating RED plant so far reported in the literature. With a nominal power capacity of 1 kW, the pilot plant reached almost 700 W of power capacity using artificial brine and brackish water, while a 50% decrease in …

A methodology for assessing the impact of salinity gradient power generation in urban contexts

2018

Abstract The paper proposes a methodology to assess the potential impact of salinity gradient power technology in urban contexts. The idea to employ such energy source in urban contexts derives from the observation that, among the energy districts outputs, low-salinity treated wastewater can be used to produce electricity if a suitable source of high salinity feed (seawater of a salt-works) is also available. The methodology uses the HOMER software for assessing the district’s electric energy production, consumption and exchange with the main grid. Then, starting from the total gross surface and the number of inhabitants of the district, some possible realistic scenarios characterized by di…

Dynamic reconfiguration of electrical connections for partially shaded PV modules: Technical and economical performances of an Arduino-based prototype

2018

The partial shading phenomenon is a well known problem of photovoltaic plants. Partial shading leads to undesirable effects such the electrical mismatch, the generation of hot spots, and generally the decrease of production of electric energy. To mitigate the last effect, a dynamic reconfiguration of the electrical connections between modules was taken into account. In this paper, starting from an already developed system for a small-scale photovoltaic plant reconfiguration, the study of the economical benefits of the employment of a reconfigurator are traced. Five different incentive policies of diverse Countries have been considered to evaluate the increase of Net Present Value of system …
