Novel zero-current-transition circuit for three-phase buck rectifiers
2002
ZCT circuits have already been proposed in the past and are becoming more and more popular in high power rectifiers and inverters where bipolar devices have to be used (IGBTs or even BJTs). Although ZCT techniques have already been applied to three-phase boost type topologies, no ZCT circuits have been proposed for three-phase buck-type topologies. The authors propose a new load independent ZCT circuit for a three-phase buck-type rectifier which achieves high noise reduction, voltage stress reduction and zero current transitions to almost all transitions of the rectifier's switches including the additional auxiliary switches.
On the de-energization of over-head low-voltage lines under high-impedance fault conditions
2018
Downed distribution conductors in overhead distribution systems, may not be a concern for equipment, but greatly challenge the safety of persons, as well as the integrity of properties. Upstream overcurrent protective devices may not be able to detect the magnitudes of fault currents resulting from these high-impedance faults. Even though protective devices capable to detect such faults have been available on the market, not all the utilities have equipped their stations with these products, likely due to the costs. In this paper, the authors formalize the problem, and propose a possible cost-effective solution for the low-voltage over-head lines with neutral wire. Such solution includes a …
Implementation and Experimental Tests of a Management System for MV/LV Distribution Grids
2019
The continuous monitoring of network power flows and the remote control of Distributed Generators and Energy Storage Systems are the essential elements to allow a full exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources and their real integration in distribution networks. Thus in the paper a management system is presented for load flow monitoring in MV/LV distribution network. Moreover, on the basis of calculated power flows, the management system is able to send control commands to DGs and ESSs, to vary their power production or power factor or eventually to disconnect them in order to maintain the network stability. The proposed solution was really implemented in the MV network of Ustica Island, dev…
Novel constant current driver for ISFET/MEMFETs characterization
2001
Abstract In the present work a new constant current driver for ISFETs and MEMFETs sensors has been developed. The proposed circuit maintains the ISFET/MEMFET operation point at constant drain–source current and voltage. The combination of some programmable current sources and an appropriate selection of a simple precision resistor allow a good ISFET/MEMFET polarization. The use of operational amplifiers with low offset and drift are required to provide the buffering function needed by the sensor.
Development of a High Granularity Photovoltaic Model That Considers Complex Nonuniform Shadow Conditions and Different Cell Temperatures
2012
In this paper is the development of a high granularity photovoltaic model that considers complex nonuniform shadow conditions and different cell temperatures. The model integrates the nonuniform shading characteristics such as different areas for each cell, different direct and indirect solar irradiations for each cell, and different temperatures. The area of the shadow on the PV module is found using image processing. The bond graph formalism facilitates the representation of the energy exchange between the different parts of the PV module. This complexity justifies the effort to develop a high-granularity tool. The proposed model is validated through experimental tests under shading condi…
Economical Incentives and Systems of Certification for the Production of Electrical Energy from Renewable Energy Resources
2007
In order to succeed in observing the international agreements undertaken in the Kyoto agreement protocol, today it is necessary to increase the electrical energy production from renewables energy resources (RERs). In this paper a complete description of the Italian incentive systems for the production of electrical energy from photovoltaic (PV) and other RERs is done. Moreover, some considerations about the effects of the incentive actions on the wide spread of RERs to produce electrical energy are reported; particular attention is paid in the economical analysis related to PY and wind systems.
A lossless current sensing technique for flyback converters
2009
Regardless of the feedback control, almost all converters require input or output current sense for overcurrent protection. If a current mode control is implemented, high accuracy is also required. The optimal current sensing method shows the highest accuracy and the lowest power dissipation. In this paper, a lossless and accurate current sensing technique for Flyback converters is proposed. An RC network is parallel connected with the primary MOSFET and the voltage signal across the sense capacitor accurately reproduces the magnetizing current waveform. The RC technique benefits from all the advantages of the most common current sensing techniques currently applied to Flyback converters, a…
Economic Analysis of a Building Integrated Photovoltaic System Without and With Energy Storage
2019
Abstract A grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system with energy storage can help in overcoming the intermittency as well as in reducing the peak demand on the network. It also benefits in electricity bills savings. In this context, it is significant to examine the appropriate use of local energy storage (i.e. battery) connected with PV for reducing the energy supply from the grid, and also its contribution in peak demand reduction with more emphasis on reduction in annual consumer electricity bill. In this paper, a techno-economic analysis of Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system with energy storage has been presented. A typical South Norwegian house, installed with PV, has be…
Physically-consistent parameterization in the modeling of solar photovoltaic devices
2011
This research tests the standard one-diode model of a crystalline-Si photovoltaic cell, focusing on the physical accuracy. In particular, the (apparent) shunt resistance and the diode ideality factor are studied. Current-voltage characteristics of illuminated crystalline-Si photovoltaic modules are analyzed, and some limits of applicability of the standard model are given. Typical values of the ideality factor for crystalline-Si devices are derived from own experimental data as well as from recently published literature. It is shown that the contribution of the apparent shunt resistance is only significant for cell voltages below about 0.45 V, and depends on irradiance. This result is consi…
High-Efficiency Multi-Junction Photovoltaic Cells in School Physics Laboratory
2020
Energy consumption in the world is increasing more and more due to the huge energy request coming from emerging countries such as China, India, etc. To face the challenge of sustainability, a solution may be the use of solar energy, since it is the most abundant renewable energy source on Earth. The electromagnetic energy coming from the Sun can be converted into usable energy (electricity) by solar cells, whose conversion efficiency is continuously increasing due to scientific and technological progress. The proposed activity is thought to be carried out with secondary as well as high school students to allow teachers to discuss sustainability issues, and to provide students with an introd…
