(Photo)catalyst Characterization Techniques

2019

Abstract This chapter reports on some characterization techniques that are commonly used for catalysts and photocatalysts. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible (UV–Vis), photoluminescence (PL), and electrochemical characterization techniques are presented with experimental details and actual case studies from literature are discussed. The chapter starts with adsorption phenomena on (photo)catalysis and adsorption isotherms are presented. Then BET analysis technique and its applications in (photo)catalysis are explained. Morphological properties (SEM), functional groups, and the interaction of substrate (…

Donor and acceptor substituted triphenylamines exhibiting bipolar charge-transporting and NLO properties

2017

Donor-acceptor type triphenylamine-based malonodinitriles were synthesized and their thermal, optical, photophysical, electrochemical and nonlinear optical properties were studied. The synthesized compounds formed glasses with the glass transition temperatures ranging from 38 to 107 °C. The ionization potentials of the samples of the compounds established by cyclic voltammetry were found to be in the range of 5.50–5.57 eV, while those estimated by photoelectron emission spectrometry ranged from 5.36 to 5.74 eV. The electron affinity values of the compounds were found to be in the range of −3.41–−3.05 eV. The ambipolar charge-transporting properties were observed for the layers of triphenyla…

Parameters of microdischarges occuring at surfaces of repolarized ferroelectrical materials

1993

Parameters of the microdischarges occuring at the surfaces of the repolarized ferroelectric materials have been investigated. It has been found that in the case of BaTiO3ceramic the number of microdischarges increases linearly with increasing repolarizing voltage Upp, the photoelectric parameters of individual discharges being unchanged. The photoelectric and current parameters for system with TGS are very similar but the dependence of the amplitude of the current pulses on the repolarizing voltage differs distinctly from that for BaTiO3.

Hybrid electrochemical/electrochromic Cu(II) ion sensor prototype based on PANI/ITO-electrode

2017

Abstract Conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI) based electrochromic films were electrochemically synthesized on indium tin oxide (ITO) covered glass electrodes and their electrochromic performances were investigated by spectroscopic methods before and after the incubation in Cu(II) ion containing aqueous solution. Chemical structure of synthesized PANI layer was evaluated by FTIR. The electrochromic performance of PANI film was determined by measuring of spectroscopic signals before and after the incubation of PANI film coated electrode in Cu(II) ion containing solution. During the change of potential, which was applied to PANI-modified electrode, the colour of PANI thin film turned from gr…

A nanostructured sensor of hydrogen peroxide

2017

Abstract A nanostructured electrochemical sensor of hydrogen peroxide was fabricated growing self-standing Pd nanowires (Pd NWs) into polycarbonate (PC) membranes through a simple metal galvanic deposition. Conditions of deposition were adjusted in order to attain 2–5 μm long Pd wires. Characterization of Pd-NWs was performed by scanning electrode microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Properties of the nanostructured sensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in phosphate buffer—ethanol solution. Addition of pure ethanol to the test solution was essential in order to increase wettability of the nanostructures. Sensing features were comp…

Electrochemical Determination of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) Ratio in Archaeological Ceramic Materials Using Carbon Paste and Composite Electrodes

2002

A method for determining the iron(III)/iron(II) ratio in ceramic materials based on microsample attachment to graphite/polyester composite electrodes is presented. This quotient is of considerable interest for determining the nature and firing conditions of the original materials in archaeological ceramics. The electrochemistry of iron in ceramic materials in acetic/acetate and Na2EDTA aqueous solutions is described in terms of reductive dissolution processes of iron(III) materials and oxidative dissolution processes of iron(II) ones. The iron(III)/iron(II) ratio is determined from peak area measurements in linear scan voltammograms performed in 0.10 M acetic/acetate buffer (pH 4.70) and 0.…

Effect of NaClO disinfection/cleaning on passive films on AISI 316L

2020

Abstract 316 L stainless steel samples were passivated in NaClO containing solutions in order to simulate disinfection processes. Passive films were grown at the open circuit potential by immersion in NaClO aqueous solutions at different concentrations and temperature in order to understand how exposure to aggressive environments could affect subsequent corrosion resistance of SSs. In the attempt to study the passive film growth mechanism, in-situ Open Circuit Potential measurements were performed in the same growth solutions. Photoelectrochemical and impedance investigation of passive films was carried out in order to link their solid state properties with their corrosion behaviour.

Morphology, physical properties, silver release, and antimicrobial capacity of ionic silver-loaded poly(l-lactide) films of interest in food-coating …

2014

In the present study, silver ions were incorporated into a poly-(l-lactide) (PLA) matrix by a solvent casting technique using different solvents and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of the different formulations on the morphology, thermal, mechanical and color properties were first evaluated. Additionally, a thorough study of the silver ions release to an aqueous environment was also monitored over time by anodic stripping voltammetry and correlated with the antimicrobial performance against S. enterica. The incorporation of silver contents of up to 1 wt % did not affect morphology, thermal or mechanical properties of the films. A sustainable, antibacterial effectiveness was found for th…

High Voltage Insulation and Gas Absorption of Polymers in High Pressure Argon and Xenon Gases

2018

High pressure gas time projection chambers (HPGTPCs) are made with a variety of materials, many of which have not been well characterized in high pressure noble gas environments. As HPGTPCs are scaled up in size toward ton-scale detectors, assemblies become larger and more complex, creating a need for detailed understanding of how structural supports and high voltage insulators behave. This includes the identification of materials with predictable mechanical properties and without surface charge accumulation that may lead to field deformation or sparking. This paper explores the mechanical and electrical effects of high pressure gas environments on insulating polymers PTFE, HDPE, PEEK, POM …

Graded Carrier Concentration Absorber Profile for High Efficiency CIGS Solar Cells

2015

We demonstrate an innovative CIGS-based solar cells model with a graded doping concentration absorber profile, capable of achieving high efficiency values. In detail, we start with an in-depth discussion concerning the parametrical study of conventional CIGS solar cells structures. We have used the wxAMPS software in order to numerically simulate cell electrical behaviour. By means of simulations, we have studied the variation of relevant physical and chemical parameters-characteristic of such devices-with changing energy gap and doping density of the absorber layer. Our results show that, in uniform CIGS cell, the efficiency, the open circuit voltage, and short circuit current heavily depe…
