EFFECT OF SHAPE ON POTATO AND CAULIFLOWER SHRINKAGE DURING DRYING
2000
ABSTRACT Shrinkage of potato cubes, parallelepipeds and cylinders was addressed during drying. A basic methodology by using image analysis was set-up in order to measure and monitor geometrical changes along the drying process. Both measurements by image analysis and directly with a calliper were carried out. Results from both methods showed a good agreement with no bias. Particle shape was found to influence shrinkage in a different way according to the axis. In fact the larger dimension shrinks less than the shorter one. This could be linked to the influence of the core drying in shrinkage. Experiments were also carried out for cauliflower stems. The difference in shrinkage between direct…
Right Heart Dysfunction and Readmission Risk Across Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Status in Patients With Acute Heart Failure.
2021
BACKGROUND: Right heart dysfunction (RHD) parameters are increasingly important in heart failure (HF). This study aimed to evaluate the association of advanced RHD with the risk of recurrent admissions across the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 3383 consecutive patients discharged for acute HF. Of them, in 1435 patients (42.4%), the pulmonary artery systolic pressure could not be measured accurately, leaving a final sample size of 1948 patients. Advanced RHD was defined as the combination of a ratio of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/pulmonary artery systolic pressure of less than 0.36 and significant tricuspid regurgitation…
EpCAM and microvascular obstruction in patients with STEMI: a cardiac magnetic resonance study
2020
Abstract Introduction and objectives Microvascular obstruction (MVO) is negatively associated with cardiac structure and worse prognosis after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), involved in epithelium adhesion, is an understudied area in the MVO setting. We aimed to determine whether EpCAM is associated with the appearance of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-derived MVO and long-term systolic function in reperfused STEMI. Methods We prospectively included 106 patients with a first STEMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention, quantifying serum levels of EpCAM 24 hours postreperfusion. All patients underwent CMR imaging 1 w…
Hemodynamic Parameters Change Earlier Than Tissue Oxygen Tension in Hemorrhage
2010
BACKGROUND: Untreated hypovolemia results in impaired outcome. This study tests our hypothesis whether general hemodynamic parameters detect acute blood loss earlier than monitoring parameters of regional tissue beds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight pigs (23-25 kg) were anesthetized and mechanically ventilated. A pulmonary artery catheter and an arterial catheter were inserted. Tissue oxygen tension was measured with Clark-type electrodes in the jejunal and colonic wall, in the liver, and subcutaneously. Jejunal microcirculation was assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Intravascular volume was optimized using difference in pulse pressure (dPP) to keep dPP below 13%. Sixty minutes after p…
Accurate mode characterization of two-mode optical fibers by in-fiber acousto-optics.
2016
Acousto-optic interaction in optical fibers is exploited for the accurate and broadband characterization of two-mode optical fibers. Coupling between LP01 and LP1m modes is produced in a broadband wavelength range. Difference in effective indices, group indices, and chromatic dispersions between the guided modes, are obtained from experimental measurements. Additionally, we show that the technique is suitable to investigate the fine modes structure of LP modes, and some other intriguing features related with modes' cut-off.
Sputum metalloproteinase-9/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 ratio correlates with airflow obstruction in asthma and chronic bronchitis
1998
Asthma and chronic bronchitis are inflammatory diseases with extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and collagen deposition. Collagen homeostasis is controlled by metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). We evaluated MMP and TIMP balance in induced sputum of 10 control, 31 untreated asthmatic, and 16 chronic bronchitic subjects. We first performed zymographic analysis to identify the profile of MMPs. Zymography revealed a similar MMPs profile in all populations studied and that MMP-9 was the major enzyme released. We then measured, using enzyme immunoassay, the concentrations of MMP-9 and of its inhibitor TIMP-1 and evaluated whether airflow limitation m…
Photoplethysmography Analysis of Artery Properties in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases
2008
In this study arterial parameters of healthy subjects were compared to those of patients with cardiovascular diseases. The photoplethysmography (PPG) measurements of blood volume pulsations have been performed. Using a novel algorithm for analysis of simultaneously measured ear and finger PPG signals, arterial parameters were evaluated in representative groups of healthy subjects and patients with cardiovascular diseases. Digital volume pulse (DVP), pulse cycle duration (T), augmentation index (AIx), reflection index (RI) and transit time of reflected wave (RTT) were evaluated in every heartbeat cycle. Correlations between the AIx and RI, T and RTT, AIx and standard deviation of AIx, RTT an…
Relativistic, model-independent, multichannel $2\to2$ transition amplitudes in a finite volume
2016
We derive formalism for determining $\textbf{2} + \mathcal J \to \textbf{2}$ infinite-volume transition amplitudes from finite-volume matrix elements. Specifically, we present a relativistic, model-independent relation between finite-volume matrix elements of external currents and the physically observable infinite-volume matrix elements involving two-particle asymptotic states. The result presented holds for states composed of two scalar bosons. These can be identical or non-identical and, in the latter case, can be either degenerate or non-degenerate. We further accommodate any number of strongly-coupled two-scalar channels. This formalism will, for example, allow future lattice QCD calcu…
Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer
2017
Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. The same problem was also investigated by means of centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models at 25 g and 40 g . The results of these tests, reported and discussed in this paper, confirm that failure mechanisms are governed substantially by the presence of the weak…
