Evidence of ternary interaction parameters for polymer solutions in mixed solvents from headspace-gas chromatography

Partial vapor pressures of the volatiles have been measured for four solvent/precipitant/polymer systems at different temperatures. The high molecular weight compounds were polysulfone or polyethersulfone and the mixed solvent was either DMF/acetone or DMF/water. Systems containing the very powerful precipitant water exhibit a special phenomenon: Upon the addition of polymer to a mixed solvent of constant composition the partial vapor pressure of water increases by a factor of more than two before it falls to zero as the volume fraction of the polymer approaches unity. Flory-Huggins theory of polymer solutions has been used to express the condition of extrema values in the total sorption, as well as the inversion point in the preferential adsorption parameters for termary polymer systems. Two approaches have been followed, the first considers the binary and ternary interaction parameters independent of polymer concentration and solvent composition. In the second one, this dependence has been introduced. Our attention is focused on the volume fraction of solvent mixture dependence of the above parameters, in order to confirm or not the coincidence between the extrema values and the inversion point. Structure and Yielding of Colloidal Silica Gels Varying the Range of Interparticle Interactions.

The relationship between interaction range, structure, fluid-gel transition, and viscoelastic properties of silica dispersions at intermediate volume fraction, Φv ≈ 0.1 and in alkaline conditions, pH = 9 was investigated. For this purpose, rheological, physicochemical, and structural (synchrotron-SAXS) analyses were combined. The range of interaction and the aggregation state of the dispersions were tuned by adding either divalent counterions (Ca(2+)) or polycounterions (PDDA). With increasing calcium chloride concentration, a progressive aggregation was observed which precludes a fluid-gel transition at above 75 mM of calcium chloride. Effects of drying temperatures on physico-chemical properties of dried and rehydrated chestnuts (Castanea sativa)

This work evaluated the effects of two drying temperatures (40 and 60 degreesC) on some physical and chemical properties of chestnuts, both dried and after their rehydration using steam at 100 degreesC. The morphological characteristics of fresh starch granules were characterized by a round or oval shape, with diameter length ranging from 3.0. to 15.0 mum. After drying and rehydration, the granules appeared more shapeless and the surfaces were quite rough. The changes also caused more of the open pore volume fraction in samples dried at 60 degreesC, than in those dried at 40 degreesC and, much more, than the fresh samples. Refractive indices were determined for four different ionic liquid + water binary systems, from (288.15 to 338.15) K, and covering the entire composition range. The four ionic liquids used were 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, 3-butyl-1-ethylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, 3-butyl-1-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate, all of them being completely miscible in water. Abstract We report new results of small-angle neutron scattering from cyclohexane- d 12 /lecithin/water micellar solutions, performed as a function of the water content, w 0 , the temperature, T and the dispersed-phase volume fraction, ф. The data from dilute samples can be interpreted in terms of the existence of giant cylindrical reverse micelles, in good agreement with the current idea of an unlimited micellar growth with ф. Gelation of semiflexible polyelectrolytes by multivalent counterions

Filamentous polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution aggregate into bundles by interactions with multivalent counterions. These effects are well documented by experiment and theory. Theories also predict a gel phase in isotropic rodlike polyelectrolyte solutions caused by multivalent counterion concentrations much lower than those required for filament bundling. We report here the gelation of Pf1 virus, a model semiflexible polyelectrolyte, by the counterions Mg(2+), Mn(2+) and spermine(4+). Gelation can occur at 0.04% Pf1 volume fraction, which is far below the isotropic-nematic transition of 0.7% for Pf1 in monovalent salt.
