Symmetry breaking and singularity structure in Bose-Einstein condensates
2012
We determine the trajectories of vortex singularities that arise after a single vortex is broken by a discretely symmetric impulse in the context of Bose-Einstein condensates in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of these singularities are analyzed to determine the form of the imprinted motion. We find that the symmetry-breaking process introduces two effective forces: a repulsive harmonic force that causes the daughter trajectories to be ejected from the parent singularity, and a Magnus force that introduces a torque about the axis of symmetry. For the analytical non-interacting case we find that the parent singularity is reconstructed from the daughter singularities after one period of the tra…
Vortices in quantum droplets: Analogies between boson and fermion systems
2010
The main theme of this review is the many-body physics of vortices in quantum droplets of bosons or fermions, in the limit of small particle numbers. Systems of interest include cold atoms in traps as well as electrons confined in quantum dots. When set to rotate, these in principle very different quantum systems show remarkable analogies. The topics reviewed include the structure of the finite rotating many-body state, universality of vortex formation and localization of vortices in both bosonic and fermionic systems, and the emergence of particle-vortex composites in the quantum Hall regime. An overview of the computational many-body techniques sets focus on the configuration interaction …
Enhanced Nonadiabaticity in Vortex Cores due to the Emergent Hall Effect.
2016
We present a combined theoretical and experimental study, investigating the origin of the enhanced non-adiabaticity of magnetic vortex cores. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy is used to image the vortex core gyration dynamically to measure the non-adiabaticity with high precision, including a high confidence upper bound. Using both numerical computations and analytical derivations, we show that the large non-adiabaticity parameter observed experimentally can be explained by the presence of local spin currents arising from a texture-induced emergent Hall effect. This enhanced non-adiabaticity is only present in two- and three-dimensional magnetic textures such as vortices and skyrmions…
Nonlocal effects in superfluid turbulence: Application to the low-density- to high-density-state transition and to vortex decay
2005
We discuss a phenomenological equation for the evolution of vortex tangle in counterflow superfluid turbulence, which takes into account the influence of the nonlocal effects, introducing into the original equation of Vinen two simple corrective terms dependent on a nonvanishing ratio between the average separation between vortex lines and the diameter of the channel. The equation allows one to describe, in relatively good agreement with experimental results, the two turbulent regimes present in counterflow superfluid turbulence and the transition between them. The decay rate of the vortex line density L, when the heat flux is suddenly turned off, is also investigated; due to the simplicity…
Importance of the crossover-current density for a vortex-glass analysis
2000
Recent experimental results obtained from transport measurements on extremely long measurement bridges [1] have questioned the validity of previous vortex-glass analyses. For electric-field windows restricted to relatively high values of E > 10 -5 V/m the dynamic exponent of the vortex-glass transition z 6, in agreement with theoretical predictions and previous experimental results. However, for extended windows (10 -1 > E > 10 -8 V/m) - while the characteristics of a vortex-glass transition are preserved - all analyses result in z ≥ 9. A combined analysis of the crossover-current density J + 0 and crossover-electric field E + 0 , which limit the critical regime of the vortex-glass transiti…
Vortex-liquid entanglement inBi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δfilms in the presence of quenched disorder
1998
We have investigated the thermally activated behavior of the in-plane electrical resistivity of ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{CaCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8+\mathrm{\ensuremath{\delta}}}$ films for magnetic fields $Bl~{10}^{4}\mathrm{G}$ applied parallel to the $c$ axis. The activation energy in the vortex-liquid state changes suddenly at a crossover field ${B}_{\mathrm{cr}}.$ The anisotropy reduction generated by oxygen annealing leads to the increase of the crossover field. For $Bl{B}_{\mathrm{cr}},$ the activation energy $U$ is weakly magnetic-field dependent. For $Bg{B}_{\mathrm{cr}},$ $U(B,T)\ensuremath{\sim}(1\ensuremath{-}{T/T}_{c0}{)/B}^{1/2},$ which corresponds to an entan…

The dynamics of emergent magnetic quasiparticles, such as vortices, domain walls, and bubbles are studied by scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM), combining magnetic (XMCD) contrast with about 25 nm lateral resolution as well as 70 ps time resolution. Essential progress in the understanding of magnetic vortex dynamics is achieved by vortex core reversal observed by sub-GHz excitation of the vortex gyromode, either by ac magnetic fields or spin transfer torque. The basic switching scheme for this vortex core reversal is the generation of a vortex-antivortex pair. Much faster vortex core reversal is obtained by exciting azimuthal spin wave modes with (multi-GHz) rotating magnetic fie…
Effective temperature and scaling laws of polarized quantum vortex bundles
2011
Abstract An effective non-equilibrium temperature is defined for (locally) polarized and dense turbulent superfluid vortex bundles, related to the average energy of the excitations (Kelvin waves) of vortex lines. In the quadratic approximation of the excitation energy in terms of the wave amplitude A, a previously known scaling relation between amplitude and wavelength k of Kelvin waves in polarized bundles, namely A ∝ k − 1 / 2 , follows from the homogeneity of the effective temperature. This result is analogous to that of the well-known equipartition result in equilibrium systems.
Effective thermal conductivity of helium II: from Landau to Gorter–Mellink regimes
2014
The size-dependent and flux-dependent effective thermal conductivity of narrow channels filled with He II is analyzed. The classical Landau evaluation of the effective thermal conductivity of quiescent He II is extended to describe the transition to fully turbulent regime, where the heat flux is proportional to the cubic root of the temperature gradient (Gorter–Mellink regime). To do so, we use an expression for the quantum vortex line density L in terms of the heat flux considering the influence of the walls. From it, and taking into account the friction force of normal component against the vortices, we compute the effective thermal conductivity as a function of the heat flux, and we disc…
Contribution of the normal component to the thermal resistance of turbulent liquid helium
2015
Previous results for the velocity profile of the normal component of helium II in counterflow are used to evaluate the viscous contribution to the effective thermal resistance. It turns out that such a contribution becomes considerably higher than the usual Landau estimate, because in the presence of vortices, the velocity profile is appreciably different from the Poiseuille parabolic profile. Thus, a marked increase in the contribution of the normal component to the thermal resistance with respect to the viscous Landau estimate does not necessarily imply that the normal component is turbulent. Furthermore, we examine the influence of a possible slip flow along the walls when the radius of …
