Analyse expérimentale et numérique du comportement de véhicules terrestres en présence d'un vent latéral instationnaire

2013

The automotive manufacturers are nowadays more and more interested in crosswind aerodynamics. Indeed, the driver is subjected every day to strong side air flows, for example when overtaking another vehicle or when passing through a lateral wind wall, generated by terrain topography (as in the case of the passage near the empty space between two buildings). The aerodynamic efforts generated in these situations can lead to undesired lateral deviations, which can be dramatic if the driver is surprised. Different experimental studies, reproducing the effects of a dynamic yaw angle, pointed out the issues of the steady methods, commonly used to qualify the vehicle crosswind behaviour. Little is st…

Nondiverging vortex pinning barriers at low current densities across the putative elastic vortex-glass–vortex-liquid transition inYBa2Cu3O7−δfilms

2001

A detailed analysis of the electric field--current density $(E\ensuremath{-}J)$ characteristics of ${\mathrm{YBa}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{7\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ films across the putative thermally induced elastic vortex-glass--vortex-liquid transition predicted by the $E(J)$ curve scaling reveals that the expected increase of the collective pinning barriers with decreasing J is cut off in the low-$J$ region, signaling a dissipation process which involves the plastic deformation of the vortex system. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the pinning barriers at low J does not change across the scaling-predicted glass transition line. For the investigated m…

FLOW PATTERN AROUND THE RIGID CEPHALIC SHIELD OF THE DEVONIAN AGNATHANERRIVASPIS WAYNENSIS(PTERASPIDIFORMES: HETEROSTRACI)

2008

Palaeozoic armoured agnathans (or ostraco- derms) are characterised by having an external, bone shield enclosing the anterior part of their bodies, which demon- strate great diversity of both forms and sizes. The functional significance of these cephalic shields remains unclear (they may have been a functional analogue of the vertebral col- umn, or merely afforded protection). Here we assess the importance of the cephalic shield in terms of locomotion. In order to do this, we have studied flow patterns of the Devo- nian heterostracan Errivaspis waynensis (White, 1935), using an anatomically correct model of E. waynensis positioned at different pitching angles. The fluid flow was visualised …

Development of a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the determination of ultraviolet filters in beach sand samples

2014

An analytical method for the determination of eight fat-soluble ultraviolet (UV) filters in beach sand samples is presented for the first time. The method is based on a leaching process of the target compounds from sand samples using vortex mixer agitation and further centrifugation, followed by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) of the supernatant and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the DLLME extract. The variables involved in the leaching and in the DLLME processes were studied to provide the best enrichment factors. In the first case, the leaching solvent type and volume, and the vortex mixer agitation time were studied. In the case of the DLLME, th…

Analytical solution for multisingular vortex Gaussian beams: The mathematical theory of scattering modes

2016

We present a novel procedure to solve the Schr\"odinger equation, which in optics is the paraxial wave equation, with an initial multisingular vortex Gaussian beam. This initial condition has a number of singularities in a plane transversal to propagation embedded in a Gaussian beam. We use the scattering modes, which are solutions of the paraxial wave equation that can be combined straightforwardly to express the initial condition and therefore permit to solve the problem. To construct the scattering modes one needs to obtain a particular set of polynomials, which play an analogous role than Laguerre polynomials for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We demonstrate here the recurrence relations need…

Devil’s vortex-lenses

2009

In this paper we present a new kind of vortex lenses in which the radial phase distribution is characterized by the "devil's staircase" function. The focusing properties of these fractal DOEs coined Devil's vortex-lenses are analytically studied and the influence of the topological charge is investigated. It is shown that under monochromatic illumination a vortex devil's lens give rise a focal volume containing a delimited chain of vortices that are axially distributed according to the self-similarity of the lens.

Multiplexing THz Vortex Beams With a Single Diffractive 3-D Printed Lens

2019

[EN] We present a novel method for experimentally generating multiplexed THz vortex beams by using a single three-dimensional printed element that combines a set of radially distributed spiral phase plates, and a binary focusing Fresnel lens. With this element, we have experimentally demonstrated that THz multiplexing can be tailored to fit within a small space on an optical bench. Results are presented beside numerical simulations, demonstrating the robust nature of the experimental method.

Diffraction-free beams in thin films

2009

The propagation and transmission of Bessel beams through nano-layered structures has been discussed recently. Within this framework we recognize the formation of unguided diffraction-free waves with the spot size approaching and occasionally surpassing the limit of a wavelength when a Bessel beam of any order n is launched onto a thin material slab with grazing incidence. On the basis of the plane-wave representation of cylindrical waves, a simple model is introduced providing an exact description of the transverse pattern of this type of diffraction-suppressed localized wave. Potential applications in surface science are put forward for consideration. Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MI…

Incorporating spatial structure and stochasticity in endangered Bonelli’s eagle’s population models: implications for conservation and management

2008

Population models have played a chief role informing management decisions for the endangered Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata) in Spain. In this paper, we incorporate spatial structure and stochasticity in the construction of individual-based metapopulation models, and use these models to explore the effects of possible management actions on the persistence of the species in Spain. To build the models we used data on seven sub-populations that have experienced different trends in the last decades, and we introduced new estimates of pre-adult survival rate. The elasticity analysis of our models showed that when the interchange of individuals among sub-populations is taken into account, pre-a…

Mixing dynamics in uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks

2014

Abstract The present work is aimed at providing experimental information on mixing rates in an unbaffled vessel under free surface vortexing conditions. The planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique was used for measuring the dispersion dynamics of a passive tracer over a vertical section of the vessel. In agreement with the quite scant literature information available for these systems, results confirm the existence of two well defined, partially segregated, zones that give rise to a double mixing dynamics behavior. A suitable mixing time definition is proposed and applied to a number of experimental runs with different stirrer geometries and agitation speeds. Results confirm that…
