School grades as predictors of self-esteem and changes in internalizing problems: A longitudinal study from fourth through seventh grade

This longitudinal study of 562 students (from ages 10 to 13) investigated whether developmental changes in internalizing problems (emotional and peer problems) can be predicted by school grades in mathematics and language arts and whether these predictive relations are mediated by students' self-esteem. The data comprised of teacher-rated internalizing problems, grades in math and language arts, and student self-ratings of self-esteem. The latent change score modeling indicated that math grades positively predicted self-esteem. Abstract We assessed potential ecotoxicity of lake sediments affected by biomining effluents in northeastern Finland. Growth, reproduction and behavior of the sediment-dwelling oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus (Muller 1774) were used as ecotoxicity endpoints. Standardized chronic bioassays were used for growth and reproduction, and acute and chronic tests with Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor (MFB) for behavior assessments. Sequential extractions were used to characterize metal bioavailability and exposure conditions in the sediments, which indicated mining-induced contamination gradients of S, Cu, Ni and U and also bioavailability gradients of S and Ni. AbstractBoreal lakes with soft water and low buffering capacity are susceptible to excess ion loading resulting from metal mining. The impact of two Finish mining sites in downstream lakes was assessed with a chronic sediment toxicity test using a laboratory-reared freshwater Lumbriculus variegatus (Oligochaeta). The test organisms were exposed to mining-contaminated natural lake sediments and hypolimnion water (HLW) or artificial freshwater (AFW) as overlying water in two independent experimental setups. We aimed to determine the impact of pre-operative isolation on postoperative pulmonary complications after elective surgery during the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We performed an international prospective cohort study including patients undergoing elective surgery in October 2020. Isolation was defined as the period before surgery during which patients did not leave their house or receive visitors from outside their household. Opiskelijoiden läsnäolon ja oppimistulosten yhteyttä on tutkittu paljon. Opiskelijat saavuttavat parempia oppimistuloksia, mikäli he ovat useammin paikalla luennoilla. Yleisimpiä syitä poissaoloon ovat muiden opintojen työtaakka, sairastaminen ja kokemus siitä, että luennoitsijat eivät tuo riittävästi lisätietoa heiltä saatujen, valmiiden muistiinpanojen lisäksi. Kursseille ilmoittautuneista opiskelijoista on aikaisempien tutkimusten mukaan osallistunut luennolle 30 % – 80 %. En este artículo se describe una plataforma de autoevaluación para alumnos de asignaturas de Teoría Económica de primer ciclo. El objetivo es propiciar la autonomía, el trabajo asiduo y personal y el autoaprendizaje del estudiante. El sistema es aplicable a otras asignaturas, en particular asignaturas que utilizan las herramientas matemáticas y en las que se requieren la corrección de numerosos ejercicios numéricos. Esta plataforma ha permitido aumentar el rendimiento y participación de los usuarios, un seguimiento por parte del profesor del proceso de aprendizaje y una homogeneización de contenidos y criterios de evaluación entre los profesores implicados.
