Vote Transfers, Thwarted Voters and Newcomers in the 2009 Presidential Runoff in Romania

2011

Abstract This article investigates the role of thwarted voters and newcomers in setting the result of the December 6th, 2009 presidential runoff in Romania. For this purpose it employs panel survey data from the Romanian Election Studies, collected across three waves: pre-election, between the two rounds, post-election. Initially, it draws a picture of the main evolutions in turnout and vote between the first and the second round, with a special emphasis on vote transfers and risks associated to turnout and pro-winner overreporting. Then it analyzes the thwarted voters and their rationalities of making second-order electoral choices in the presidential runoff. The influence of campaign deve…

Necrotizing periodontitis in the context of Takayasu s disease: report of a case

2011

Necrotizing periodontitis is characterized by gingival necrosis with bleeding and pain, and alveolar bone attachment loss. The disease is associated to spirochete and Prevotella intermedia infection, as well as to a series of bacterial infections, with an altered local host immune response and tissue destruction. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with inflammatory vasculitis of the aorta and its main branches, known as Takayasu’s disease. In the course of treatment of the latter, she developed necrotizing periodontitis. In this case local factors such as abundant bacterial plaque accumulation secondary to a lack of tooth brushing, and the administration of methotrexate, may have pl…

Periopathogenic bacteria in dental plaque of Congolese patients with periodontitis : a pilot study

2018

Background Periopathogenic bacteria play an important role in the etiology of periodontal disease. At present, no study screening for periopathogens in the DR Congo was carried out. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the prevalence of five periopathogens in Congolese patients with periodontitis and to determine the association between these bacteria. Material and Methods Twelve patients (eight women and four men) with a mean age of 45 ± 19 years from those consulted in dental services of two medical centers of Kinshasa from April 2017 to October 2017 were included. Full mouth examination was registered, the probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level were assessed at six …

Diritti di partecipazione politica e piattaforme digitali, alcune riflessioni

2022

The human milk microbiome changes over lactation and is shaped by maternal weight and mode of delivery

2012

Background Breast milk is recognized as the most important postpartum element in metabolic and immunologic programming of health of neonates. The factors influencing the milk microbiome and the potential impact of microbes on infant health have not yet been uncovered. Objective Our objective was to identify pre- and postnatal factors that can potentially influence the bacterial communities inhabiting human milk. Design We characterized the milk microbial community at 3 different time points by pyrosequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction in mothers (n = 18) who varied in BMI, weight gain, and mode of delivery. Results We found that the human milk microbiome changes over lactati…

Schelling-Voter Model: An Application to Language Competition

2013

In this work we analyze the language competition problem by using an interacting agent-based model which interpolates the classical Schelling and Voter models. Briefly, an agent may change its place of residence or his language when he is surrounded by more individuals of the other kind than the ones he can tolerate. We analyze this dynamic process in terms of the free space to move in, the pressure to change the language, and the propensity to change location. We identify the different regimes and the relationship with the language competition problem. Fil: Caridi, Délida Inés. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales. Brief Report: Intestinal Dysbiosis in Ankylosing Spondylitis

2015

Objective Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common, highly heritable immune-mediated arthropathy that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals exposed to an unknown but likely ubiquitous environmental trigger. There is a close relationship between the gut and spondyloarthritis, as exemplified in patients with reactive arthritis, in whom a typically self-limiting arthropathy follows either a gastrointestinal or urogenital infection. Microbial involvement in AS has been suggested; however, no definitive link has been established. The aim of this study was to determine whether the gut in patients with AS carries a distinct microbial signature compared with that in the gut of healthy contro…

Ar mangānu aktivētā cinka sulfīda nanomateriālu sintēze

2021

“Ar mangānu aktivētā cinka sulfīda nanomateriālu sintēze”. Dile M., zinātniskā vadītāja M. Sc. Eng.

Characteristics of the salivary microbiota in cheilitis granulomatosa.

2019

Background Cheilitis granulomatosa (CG) is a disturbing and persistent idiopathic lip swelling. The cause and treatment has not been wholly elucidated. Some reports infer that CG is mainly associated with dental infection but no firm or reliable microbiological evidence has been provided for a causative organism. This study aimed to evaluate whether microorganisms contribute to the etiology of CG in order to inform appropriate treatment options in clinic. Material and Methods Unstimulated saliva was collected from 15 CG patients who were diagnosed clinically and pathologically and 15 healthy controls (HC). DNA was extracted from the precipitate of the centrifuged saliva for 16s rRNA high-th…
