Research in disaster settings: a systematic qualitative review of ethical guidelines

2016

Background Conducting research during or in the aftermath of disasters poses many specific practical and ethical challenges. This is particularly the case with research involving human subjects. The extraordinary circumstances of research conducted in disaster settings require appropriate regulations to ensure the protection of human participants. The goal of this study is to systematically and qualitatively review the existing ethical guidelines for disaster research by using the constant comparative method (CCM). Methods We performed a systematic qualitative review of disaster research ethics guidelines to collect and compare existing regulations. Guidelines were identified by a three-tie…

Conditional cash transfers : empowerment resilience and good behaviours in development policies.

2018

Empowerment, resilience and poverty reduction strategies seem to be bound by mutual exclusion. Through poverty reduction and empowerment, people escape poverty and precarization processes by acquiring capabilities that give them both economic and existential stability; in a word, they acquire human resilience. Nevertheless, the relationship between the three concepts and their corresponding practices is characterized by a complementary link that works as a matrix of neoliberal subjectivation processes that involve both men and women on a global level. Said link is a broad and diverse one where other practices and concepts interact: i.e. vulnerability, securitization, care, responsibility an…

Resilience in small urban centers with a strong historical connotation

2015

Potendosi indubbiame…

Vulnerability Black Markets: Empirical Evidence and Scenario Simulation

2009

This paper discusses the manifest characteristics of online Vulnerability Black Markets (VBM), insider actors, interactions and mechanisms, obtained from masked observation. Because VBM transactions are hidden from general view, we trace their precursors as secondary evidence of their development and activity. More general attributes of VBMs and the exploits they discuss are identified. Finally, we introduce a simulation model that captures how vulnerability discoveries may be placed in a dual legal-black market context. We perform simulations and find that if legal markets expose vulnerabilities that go unresolved, the security and quality of software may suffer more than in the absence of…

A review of estimating population exposure to sea-level rise and the relevance for migration

2020

Abstract This review analyses global or near-global estimates of population exposure to sea-level rise (SLR) and related hazards, followed by critically examining subsequent estimates of population migration due to this exposure. Our review identified 33 publications that provide global or near-global estimates of population exposure to SLR and associated hazards. They fall into three main categories of exposure, based on definitions in the publications: (i) the population impacted by specified levels of SLR; (ii) the number of people living in floodplains that are subject to coastal flood events with a specific return period; and (iii) the population living in low-elevation coastal zones. …

Biografic turning point in lifetime of individuals living in degraded contexts. The role of resilience.

2020

In the course of their lives all people experience events such as the loss of a parent, a child, job or sometimes violence, after which life is no longer the same. In these moments the regular, repetitive and comforting course of life changes because the event is the turning point that changes the direction of the subject's lifetime. The paper is focused on a study of 60 cases in which resilience intervenes in the biographies of individuals, living in conditions of socio-spatial marginality and high social vulnerability, to restore the existential imbalance of a biographical discontinuity represented by a traumatic event. The problem of the research focuses on understanding the role of resi…

Vulnerability, freedom of choice and structural global injustice: The “consent” to exploitation of migrant women workers

2019

This chapter analyzes the philosophical implications related to the “position of vulnerability” defined by the Directive 2011/36/EU on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and Protecting its Victims as “a situation in which the person concerned has no real or acceptable alternative but to submit to the abuse involved” (art. 2.2). In particular, the chapter focuses on the “choice” made by migrant women employed in care and domestic work and in the agricultural sector in Italy. The Italian labor market is marked by the exploitation of migrant women, especially women from Romania, due to social, economic and legal factors that will be considered from a gender perspective. Women…

Vulnerabilità posizionale e intersezionale. I minori migranti soli come caso paradigmatico

2020

Mobility and Spatio-Temporal Exposure Control

2013

Modern risk assessment methods cover many issues and encompass both risk analysis and corresponding prevention/mitigation measures. However, there is still room for improvement and one aspect that may benefit from more work is “exposure control”.The “exposure” an asset experiences plays an important part in the risks facing the asset.Amongst the aspects that all too regularly get exposed is user identities and user location information, and in a context with mobile subscriber and mobility in the service hosting (VM migration/mobility) the problems associated with lost identity/location privacy becomes urgent. In this paper we look at “exposure control” as a way for analyzing and protecting use…

2SPD-025 Application of hazard vulnerability analysis to evaluate the risk level of medicine shortages

2020

Background and importance Drug shortages have become a worldwide phenomenon which has repercussions on patient care and on the hospital’s budget. Aim and objectives The aim of our study was to assess the risk of shortages of drugs included in our hospital therapeutic formulary (HTF), for which there is shortage reporting, using a hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA). Material and methods We performed an HVA on 43 drugs in our HTF, which were also included in the Italian Medicines Agency list of shortages. The HVA used to assign the risk of shortage (ROS) included three macro areas: probability that the shortages will occur based on shortages in the past 2 years; magnitude factors which incre…
